@stux I teach high school in the states and at a private school, though not a ritzy one, but there is money. Limited public transit in the area. I rarely see my students owning their own cars, though, unless they are gearheads and it’s been their dream they’ve been saving for since they started mowing lawns and babysitting. Possibly because most of my students are headed to colleges where they won’t need a car, so the need is quite temporary (licensing at 16.5, college at age 18-19).

@clive how sure are you that Nature doesn’t “need” us? We are inextricably part of it and your solution seems to extricate us. I believe Nature needs our immersed attention so that we recognize ourselves as stakeholders and participants and can make decisions with the wisdom and humility that comes with intimacy.

@Wolven for sure! My family was in a cluster recently and I just couldn’t bear spending $50 every time we probably should have tested the four of us. And there were people with rebound cases after 10 days who had to test again and again too.

@Wolven I was surrounded by a family reunion cluster in July and August. We probably would have contained it better if it didn’t cost $12 every time you wanted to test. One of my teens missed out of a big trip this summer due to catching it and I think they probably got it from someone on a Paxlovid rebound. With more frequent testing we could have identified the rise in infectiousness rather than assuming they were in that day 6-10 ok to be around people if masked phase.

@KimPerales having been through a cluster this summer, even with “the tools” the cost of testing prohibited doing it often enough-$50 to test my family of 4. And we had one severe allergic reaction to Paxlovid so that tool’s not a age option for everyone. Also had some Paxlovid rebound cases, one of which I think infected someone else, which we might have been able to forestall with more frequent testing.

@clive I’ve got a heavier e-bike (75lbs) because I’m a bigger person and couldn’t ride the smaller ones. I have many years of experience bike commuting in large cities (mostly Toronto) before I gave up biking in my mid-30s due to knee pain. Now in my late 40s I’m back in the saddle. I slow way down on bike paths when passing people, but have had a couple scares when people walk onto the path from behind a bush and aren’t expecting someone going so fast.

@clive the most scary thing though has been drivers who seem to feel threatened by my speed and will stop at nothing to put me in my place. Have been aggressively closely passed while doing 20mph in a 20mph zone, and passed on the left while I’m signaling and turning left from the left hand side of the lane.

@futurebird I think there’s a developmental maturation piece, too. I accelerated in math until I was taking theoretical real analysis at MIT at age 17 and my brain just hit a wall. Later after a few years of astrophysics grad school it started to make sense to me, not because I was doing anything closely related but because I had acquired some kinds of habits of mind and flexibility of thinking. I also had a really weak intro to proof in high school.

@Nonilex I saw a sign up at my local Home Depot asking for pennies and wondered if it had to do with this. Their pricing is still not rounded, so it must be a real headache!
