We need exposure to nature …… but it sure doesn’t need exposure to *us*.My essay on “The Biophilia Paradox”: https://medium.com/@clivethompson/the-biophilia-paradox-a45758e36a9If you’re not a Medium subscriber, here’s a “friend” link: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-biophilia-paradox-a45758e36a9?sk=fb8db68f125442a6a33f8f531e837997

@clive I think the real problem is seeing a line of separation between us and nature. We are animals. We cannot be extricated from nature. And we are harming nature, but it is not Us vs. It. It is Us vs. Ourselves. To the extent we have changed our surroundings such that we think there is a line, then that is what needs to be corrected. I think putting the line there gives us cover to continue on the path we are on.

@clive how sure are you that Nature doesn’t “need” us? We are inextricably part of it and your solution seems to extricate us. I believe Nature needs our immersed attention so that we recognize ourselves as stakeholders and participants and can make decisions with the wisdom and humility that comes with intimacy.

@abosio True enough, we are animals and that’s part of nature! But somewhat uniquely amongst animals, we have the ability to massively disrupt the way the rest of nature works, at scale and very rapidly … that’s the rub

@cliveHuman-ecosystem interaction has a very deep and rich positive history where I live. What we need isn't as much a retreat from nature but a respect for and reciprocity with it. But those changes require a move away from capitalist and colonial systems.

@CedarTea True enough! Extractive capitalism is really at the heart of the problem here
