@futurebird I'm impressed that, once I figured out what the hell was going on, it was almost kinda readable

@futurebird So freedom is a distance? How is it measured? If freedom is often measured in inches, then a mile of freedom must be, like, a lot of freedom.

I guess the question now is, will all those Republicans who endorsed Harris and called Trump a danger to democracy now keep Trump in check? Or will they fall back in line?#USPol #Election2024

@futurebird I always had the greatest trouble with probabilities/stats.Also continuity (epsilon-delta), but I think that was mostly because the examples were always so limited. The concept made perfect sense, but how to apply it in practice seemed to get completely handwaved.

@futurebird Okay this is driving me crazy now ... My first reaction was "Isn't G-Man the name of that classic video game with the robot whose arm is some kind of gun and who has a dog?"And apparently it's not, but now my brain refuses to tell me what that video game was actually called! I feel like this is not something my brain ought to forget!

@futurebird I used it a bit in the early 00s and thought it was okay at what it did, but the last few times I've dipped my toes back in, it's just been way too bloated and overwhelming. I always ended up completely lost with no idea how to actually use it. And that's as someone who used to use it.

@futurebird Once upon a time a little girl wished for a pony. Not just any pony, no, a fierce and terrible dino pony! By chance her wish was heard by a passing fairy who was looking for a new hero in the mortal world. The fairy offered the girl a deal: come with me to the land of fairies & help us against the Evil, and I will grant you the power to transform into any creature you can imagine. Thus was born Dinoponera the Fierce and Terrible!Needs more ants, I know. Maybe the fairies are ants?

@futurebird I think I'd need around $70k for it to be an immediate and significant change to how I live. Less than that and I'd just keep living the way I do now, but with fewer worries and more luxuries.

@futurebird Have you played The Longing? It's basically a game where you play "Krobus" and have to spend ages being alone. It's played in "real time", and iirc you can essentially just leave your little shadow person sitting there in the dark for a year, or you can explore caves and read books and otherwise pass the time.

@futurebird It's the fridge magnets, isn't it? Someone took all Jack's fridge magnets. Jack loved his fridge magnet collection

The EU should impose a tourist tax of 100% on total global wealth above $10 million. Come as a billionaire, leave as a mere millionaire. Let Europe lighten your spirit.

Are we surprised? Israel has a whole unit dedicated to smearing Gaza journalists, trying to find or make up "justifications" to "legitimize" murdering them.> “If the global media is talking about Israel killing innocent journalists, then immediately there’s a push to find one journalist who might not be so innocent, as if that somehow makes killing the other 20 acceptable,” the article quoted an intelligence source saying.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/15/israeli-military-unit-reportedly-tasked-with-linking-journalists-in-gaza-to-hamas#Israel #Gaza #Palestine

All these people falling over themselves to praise Charlie Kirk worry me way more than whoever killed him. It's not a great sign when we can't condemn a man like Kirk.If we want political violence to end, we *must* be able to condemn people like Charlie Kirk long before it comes to violence. People who are openly proud of their lack of empathy and who work hard to spread hatred of others belong in psychiatric care or prison, not at the head of political organizations.#CharlieKirk #USPol

@aral Alas, notice the careful wording: "Tomorrow we will dispatch a naval vessel from Cartagena with all necessary resources in case it was necessary to assist the flotilla and carry out a rescue operation."They foresee that Israel will sink the flotilla and that the people on board will need rescuing. It doesn't sound like they're actually going to defend the flotilla.

@futurebird I always heard that anecdote applied to Gauss, not Galois. Of course maybe that's just more proof it's made up.

@stux What are you talking about? There is *so much horizontal space* you could have five sidebars and still have room to spare.I only need one sidebar, though. It has all my bookmarks.

@futurebird But ... I love a congested bookshelf!I recently got several new bookcases, which means I have way more shelf space than I have books. I'm working on fixing that, of course, but for now it looks so empty! I miss having my shelves absolutely packed with books with no space for new ones.
