A reminder: Just like Twitter, the value of your experience here is based heavily on who you follow (or don’t). Take time to seek out accounts of people who share knowledge, experience, views, pointers, news… whatever you want to know/read more about. Follow people if they keep coming up in your feed.Don’t view following as a permanent action. Trial various accounts. It’s ok to sample them for a while, then unfollow if they post too often or about topics you don’t find interesting.

@wjmaggos @timbray Hoping this is him, and front-end.social would be a logical instance choice. Though if him, he hasn’t done any of the rel=“me” for profile fields yet to help verify the account’s identity.

On Tuesday, I flew back to Ohio. Wednesday, I returned with this little guy. Meet Beau, the latest addition to the Bowman family. 9 weeks old, golden retriever. All fluff and love. Can melt any human he sees on sight. #dogsofmastodon

In case you wondered (like me) or maybe you haven’t considered it yet… I confirmed that Google is indeed indexing public Mastodon profiles and posts. And it’s doing so rather quickly.I posted about Beau here on Thursday morning, and this is the only place I shared about him. And that post and photo already show up in a search for “Doug Bowman Beau” two days later. I didn’t check until now. So I don’t yet know how long it took to be crawled and indexed. But definitely < 48 hours.

This is significant, because I remember the days when we (at Twitter) were negotiating with Google about access to the firehose of tweet data.Rapidly getting tweets into the Google index played a large part in boosting the awareness and findability of real-time content that had only been shared on Twitter.Mastodon hosts could confirm whether crawlers are directly hitting their servers. Or Google may have already created multiple instances of their own, solely for the purposes of indexing.

@simon I hadn’t checked that yet, but assumed it might exist, and that it would be written based on host-configured settings.I wonder whether Google figured out it was faster to set up their own instances, sucking in everything they can, but giving priority to certain content (by instance or account). They certainly had multiple flags set on Twitter accounts based on how high profile they were. New/low follower accounts rarely made it into the index in the early days.

@simon And it could just be standard link crawling. But if anyone inside is paying attention, given the different nature of public real-time content, they may have gotten out front of this, and proactively set out a strategy for Fediverse/ActivityPub.

@misty I really appreciate that the timeline here ends. No more new content for a while. Not even on a refresh. I reach the end, and can go about my day.

PSA: Those screenshots of 500+ word responses from ChatGPT aren’t as cool as you think they are. Not worth zooming in and panning around to read them.In sharing them, you are kind of like our uncle who still mass-forwards joke emails from his aol account, and doesn’t even bother to use bcc.

One thing @medium got right from the start with its Mastodon instance at me.dm: Domain length matters. It’s not always visible. But when displayed, shorter names fit better within certain display limitations.Full usernames end up being similar to email addresses. Not enough attention has been paid to short domains yet as a feature and a nice side benefit to a good host/moderator. Some soon-to-be instances will target similar ultra-short domains, and new users will naturally gravitate to them.

As you experiment with various clients and apps for #Mastodon to get a feel for what works best for you, you’ll likely be authorizing a growing set of apps over time. It’s worthwhile security practice to visit your “Authorized apps” page every now and then and remove apps you tried but no longer use. You can always re-auth them later if needed.Sign in to your instance’s URL in a browser, then Preferences → Account → Authorized apps, and revoke anything you don’t recognize or no longer use.

Beau at 3 months. Growing quickly. Total trouble-maker. Yesterday he discovered hanging toilet paper rolls, and emptied a full roll with two separate pulls.

Golden Retriever puppies have evolved to be so cute, because otherwise they would never survive the wrath of their owners for all the stupid things they do.Every person who ever told us Goldies are the smartest dogs are all part of a concerted marketing effort to deceive and conceal the truth. This is Beau at just over 5 months. Guilty as charged, all counts.

We brought Buster (our 7yr old mix) home from the hospital late last night. Worst case scenario. Late stages of lymphoma, which explains how lethargic he’s been the last couple weeks. No chemo, as that rarely cures at this stage, and only prolongs. So now we try to keep him comfortable at home, and spend as long as we can with him. A few days. Maybe a week. Hardest call will be when to say goodbye. We hope he can somehow tell us when it’s time. He’s been the best and easiest. 💔 #DogsOfMastodon

Products and networks and brands come and go. Even still, you work on one that scales big enough, including its brand elements, and you don’t anticipate seeing its demise, let alone its disappearance.Dick Costolo used to talk about Twitter achieving escape velocity. Where it would become so big and so entrenched in culture, it couldn’t fail. We all know how that fared for the Titanic.RIP, Twitter, and all the Larry birds.

It’s like Nike abandoning the swoosh and renaming themselves Y.Or Apple abandoning the apple and rebranding as B.Most company execs/owners would be thrilled to have so much brand recognition that their product could be recognized (and positively so) around the world by symbol only. They burn thru billions trying to get to that point. This clown paid billions for a brand that had that, then he tossed it all away.
