It is so fucking frustrating to me how we never actually talk about the de facto hierarchy of rights we have in Canada.In theory, all civil rights are equal.In practice, rights for Christians come first, then everybody else, then queer people and kids.And we can't fix that if we don't actually say it.

There is no legitimate justification for discrimination against LGBT kids in Canada.There is not a single person in Canada who has a legitimate interest in outing trans kids in schools, or not letting them use their preferred names or genders.If this wasn't a conflict between Christian extremists and LGBT children, no serious person would pretend this was a complicated issue.

This is not how you take cuttings, but my girlfriend accidentally broke off a big branch of this tomato plant and asked me to try to save it, so I am giving it a shot.I'm honestly amazed at how well it's doing.Zero roots, and it's still (so far) able to sustain this much leaf and stem and even flowers and fruit.

Okay, so, return to work.I feel like there is a systemic inequality that people haven't really been talking about as much.Bosses and extroverts and neurotypical people are saying "oh, we don't like emails and Zoom calls, because there's information that doesn't get communicated through these methods."What?What is that information?If you are communicating a substantial amount of secret coded information that can't make it into the literal syntax of the words that you are saying, you should be concerned about that.Both because you are doing a shitty job at communicating, but also because of the types of people you are choosing to exclude.

I am much better at my job, now that I work from home.The difference is that if people need to communicate with me by email or IM or phone or video call, they think about what they want to say ahead of time and then they tell me the words that communicate the ideas that they want me to know.It's a good system.

I think there's a good amount of social information that is maybe useful to some people for practical purposes, that people round up to "body language" or something. Stuff that I don't really understand. But I also suspect that there are some pretty massive harms from using that in a professional setting.

I need help figuring out if I am an idiot or if the contractor I've hired is an idiot.I have a list of organizations, some of which are groupings of other organizations on the list. So Marvel and Pixar and Disney are all organizations, but Marvel and Pixar are both owned by Disney.The contractor wants to have a table for "parent organizations" and a table for "child organizations" and then relate parent to child somehow. I would like to avoid this, because it means we have to remember if something is a parent or child, and potentially something might be both.I want to have one big table for all organizations, and then a second table for the relationships so that it looks like the picture below.Does my idea make sense? Is their way better? If I am right, how do I explain what I want to them?

You can't just do vaccines. Vaccines work, but to address the COVID crisis you need to do masks and air filters too.You can't just make businesses pollute less. That works, but to address climate change you need wide-scale carbon reduction AND carbon capture AND geoengineering.You can't just fix zoning in city cores. That works, but to address the housing crisis you need to densify housing everywhere people live. Including rural areas.People die if we don't do all of these things, as much as possible, as soon as possible.

Imagine if our COVID response had included:-Making the lives of service workers better, so young/poor people didn't get sick and die from working shitty jobs; and-Making housing for young/poor people better, so people didn't need to worry about getting sick or dying from their roommates shitty jobs?Instead, we chose to:-Blame the people we were putting most at risk;-Punish people with roommates by uniquely not allowing them a "social bubble";-Steal their CERB, and give it to their bosses instead.

BC's statement on BA.2.86 is so disappointing, but not at all unexpected.Let me translate:"...in an individual... who has not travelled outside the province"- BC has no plans to investigate how this deadly virus got here.“So far, there does not seem to be increased severity with this strain of COVID and the individual is not hospitalized"- We are defining "severity" to mean "severity if infected" not "health impact on the population". Based on this definition, we can't prove it's much worse than other variants, so we're going to imply that it's safe.“We urge all people in B.C. to continue to follow public-health advice and to stay home when sick, wear masks when appropriate, follow respiratory etiquette, wash hands frequently, and, most importantly, stay up to date on your vaccinations.”- Lol, we are not going to bring back mask mandates and it's basically impossible to get access to vaccines in BC.

The stigma around HPV and HSV is bad, and I'm not saying it's not bad.And we have HIV treatments that make transmission effectively impossible, that you can take if you have HIV or are at high risk of getting it. Yet there is massive social stigma there.Yet, as a society, there's essentially no concern around SARS-CoV-2.Even though SARS-CoV-2 is dramatically more dangerous than HPV or HSV could possibly be.Because COVID isn't a sex thing or whatever.

What I'd really be curious about if wearing masks for COVID safety reduces any of the social advantages that NTs have over neurodivergent people.Because a lot of people used the premise of autistic people's sensory issues as an argument against a mask ban.And, like... NTs do not care about autistic people's sensory issues.Very clearly that is not something that the NT population cares about.
