@coolboymew Sad that they'll never know the simple joys of the "sweet" and "dude" tattoo skit. "What does mine say?"

The new Evil Dead movie was sufficiently horrible. More fun than the 2013 reboot though.

@feld tbf I listen to some Economist articles and the humans they get to read out some of the articles butcher the pronounciation of latin phrases or some more obscure english words. At least an AI would be consistent in that case. That said, I agree with you there's no way an AI could do a good audiobook performance in 2023. Something like Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter or Steve Coogan reading one of the Alan Partridge "autobiographies" have an additional quality to them.

@lore I wonder if you could get a free tv and then overwrite the operating system with something not awful

@si_irini The Elgin Marbles probably do need to be returned. Especially in an era when the UK can make high quality copies of them. As a British person I'd prefer to go and see them in Athens - at the moment they are being displayed in an artificial environment without the correct historical context/setting.

@si_irini Would also like to add that the political discourse in the UK in the past two years has led me to believe that they are going to be returned soon. There have been a lot of politicians on the airwaves talking about how they could be returned for a "long-term loan" which basically means permanently.

@khoji @si_irini Yeah I can definitely see that side of it in the discourse here. To be honest I probably manifest some of those attitudes because I think returning of national treasures needs to happen on a case-by-case basis. With the Elgin Marbles it's completely clear that they would be returned to a good home but I'm less convinced in other cases.

@khoji @si_irini I think the issue is too complicated to be able to apply a blanket rule for each (stolen) treasure. There was a concerning news story the other day about Benin Bronzes going missing in Nigeria after being returned by Germany.https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/berlins-benin-bronze-return-a-fiasco-as-artefacts-vanish-jq9xsn9cf

@khoji @si_irini I'm happy with any resolution that still leaves the artefacts available for public display (in any country). I think the most important thing is that humanity is guaranteed access to the treasures of the past, wherever they happen to be housed. If there's a risk that they won't be publically available anymore then you are doing the artefacts themselves a disservice.

I need to stop compulsively consuming Bam Margera news. The earthrocker video was funny but some of the /tv/ threads are straight up ghoulish.

@kaia I completely agree with this sentiment and I see the same thing in the UK. The moment you resort to the ad hominem attack of referring to your opponents as a basket of deplorables or w/e you've lost the argument.

@selea I found the openSUSE package manager pretty perplexing last time I used it but that was a while ago. Some people seem really fond of the rolling release openSUSE though.
