No, we will be able to measure the damage. Believe this.

@feld AI narration is probably better than when a celebrity narrates a book. Also a ton of books are already narrated by voice synthesis and AI is amazingly better than those.

@Moon Doing good character voices will take a while to do with AI, but I believe they'll get the pacing and inflection right within 2 years

@feld jade has been making AI narrated scripts for fun and they're already good, you can tweak the text to get the inflection you want. without a doubt it won't do some narration right for fiction but if it's narrating a nonfiction book it's already good enough.

@ageha @feld you're right I just think the baseline of many audiobooks is actually pretty low when I have downloaded them.

@feld tbf I listen to some Economist articles and the humans they get to read out some of the articles butcher the pronounciation of latin phrases or some more obscure english words. At least an AI would be consistent in that case. That said, I agree with you there's no way an AI could do a good audiobook performance in 2023. Something like Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter or Steve Coogan reading one of the Alan Partridge "autobiographies" have an additional quality to them.

I think AI can in 2023. I just don't think it's affordable yet for anyone to even offer as a service. It's like the dude I overheard at dinner a couple weeks ago saying how he owned a level 4 self driving company in Israel -- it exists, but nobody can afford the $350k price tag to mod your car for it
