@bradbarrish @updates @casey I agree with your assessment that making search engines for the information youโ€˜ve been personally exposed to (and getting meaningful results back) is becoming more and more feasible - and I think searching your personal cross-section of exposures is a much higher-entropy feed than googling on the open internet.

@anders Credentials are probably legit, but the infra is whatโ€˜s bothering me after that post. The same unknown person also took over one of the journalist mastodons recently. Stuff like journalist credentials should IMO be handled in a responsible and secure, thus accountable to known people, manner.

@anders There are some funky projects where the LLM is prompted or evaluated in a way that you get a probability *tree* instead of a linear conversation, so the exploration of semantic probabilities becomes possible. Thatโ€˜s pretty interesting.

Has anyone worked out what #Snipd buisness model is? I like the idea of the app and I get why it resonates with people, but the lack of any paid tiers is making me uncomfortable about how much personal info this is leaking out.

@anders Khoj. It "only" does semantic search but you could lever the same database to also compute relations between notes without explicit search, just using search for each note. Or note block

@anders the core utility is a python program that runs from terminal, yeah. And then you point it at various resource locations around your system. But it comes with an obsidian plugin to access the API from within Obsidian itself.

@anders I know of one scientific-aimed app, noScribe, that deploys Whisper locally. The neat thing is, it also has a second model for speaker recognition, and it ships with a set of secondary utilities for reviewing transcripts. Took 38 minutes to transcribe a five minute ramble of mine on a test, but that was on an old Wintel labtop thatโ€˜s like six years behind modern hardware. Havenโ€˜t tested it on my tower yet.

@anders Maybe also sent Simon Willinson a quick mail? He keeps using Whisper to transcribe things like his podcast appearances, he might have more awareness of the tech sphere.

@nicole Peace of mind is central to my motivation. If it clears up my mind, thatโ€˜s great. That *does* make me more productive, but even then, good productivity makes peace of mind when I actually want to be productive. Any other mindset I feel only fuels a toxic kind of FOMO (that gets written so much about to not fall down that trap) which isnโ€˜t actually good for you.

@nicole one of the best premises that have come out of the PKM writing space for me is "you donโ€˜t have to do everything right this instance. Record and let the system remember - youโ€˜ll come back to this when it matters to you". Being able to stretch thinking across time when you actually have great thoughts on the matter is powerful. Even against a deadline, a nightโ€˜s sleep does a lot.

@nicole I have this whole vague spin about "Relevants" and "Obliviates". The later are the kind of material you need to have off your mind either way, but probably will not come back to. How to avoid overloading an archiving system with the noise from Obliviates I donโ€˜t have a concrete theory on *yet*, but I feel like with the increased capabilities of databases in Tools for Thought, discrimination between the twoโ€˜s getting easier all the time.

@nicole Yup, thatโ€˜s my system too! Better to have it *somewhere* than *nowhere*. I have great faifth in the ability of coming personal search and database tools to dig these things up when they matter.

@anders @notroot Thereโ€˜s a visualizer tool for JSONs producing a graph-like view, for VS Code. Unfortunately I am away from my computer and canโ€˜t re-google it at the moment

@simon I prefer the term "LLM" because it keeps in mind the learning objective and framing of these systems. And Iโ€˜ve been cautiously poking at them - however, I have become increasingly sceptical of what they can achieve technically especially in terms of reasoning. And the economics of the space look bad. At this point I am seriously worried about the social impacts and thatโ€˜s a big reason for me to avoid usage of them.
