@nik @allison @grey @neauoire Mm, to be honest we never did research other options, Mastodon was just the only thing I looked at!Some folks have asked about Mastodon forks like Hometown, and that's pretty compelling. Just haven't gotten around to asking our instance members about how they feel about Hometown too!

Hometown has a few features that make more sense to Grey's point though, like local-only posting.That being said, having this place be a centralized forum where you only interact with other people here could be interesting! It just wasn't considered at the time.

Just set up a cronjob to automatically delete remote assets more than 7 days old on this instance!Feels silly, "cron" was just a thing I knew about and was kind of scared to set it up because of the effort it takes to learn something new. Turns out it was super easy to run a daily process!#theWorkshop

@halcek @fluxx Halcek, I've seen a number of arguments that boil down to "what they said is not what they really mean." That's a very tricky path to go down.When you separate the "meaning" from the literal words, it frees the writer from all responsibility and places all fault with the reader. But when you write, "For lunch, I invited the strippers, John and Jane," is it really the responsibility of the reader to understand that you actually invited 4 people instead of 2?

@halcek @fluxx As a person speaking, you should be actively clearing up misunderstandings to say what you mean. If no one says what they actually mean, how can you trust what anyone says? Why should you trust RMS?Taking RMS at his word from posts on his blogs and other sources, outlined here: https://rms-open-letter.github.io/appendix I find what he says to be quite troubling. It's well within the right of folks in the free software movement to decide if they want folks who speak like this to flourish or not.

Merveilles is going to have its third anniversary this year! It's exciting to think that it's been this long already. I've seen some really cool stuff in here :3I'm also planning to migrate the instance to Hometown over this holiday! I'll post more details on @maru when they're more solidified.

The magic of open source is that you can change things to be whatever you want, but I think we should acknowledge the effort that takes too.Context: there's a package I'm using at work that, at first, seemed to fit a need we had—but integrating it into our large codebase is a nightmare because it's not really built to run tests on every single file we have. The next step from here seems to be to either change it ourselves or to wait for the maintainer, and either of those feel like a lot.

For folks that don't know: an ERG stands for an Employee Resource Group, which is an employee-led group around a specific topic that helps run events, shape company policy, and help inform business initiatives based on that topic.The one I'm a chair of is a queer-focused one, so we advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ issues in my company.Besides that, I figured I'd make another introduction post to reword some things and include some other hobbies of mine :D
