#RMS sometimes has trouble expressing himself very well, linguistically speaking. But his actual positions, if you try to parse the over-combined, long-wonded sentences, are far more progressive, than most.In other words, he’s not far too good a writer, but he’s (on most things) a fairly decently grounded philosopher.

@halcek Did you read the open letter? It's not about language. It's about misogyny, ableism, and transphobia. And we cannot accept this in our community - especially not as one of our representatives. https://rms-open-letter.github.io/

@fluxx The open letter is not about language, because my argument is that most (not all) people endorsing the letter have trouble (not without merit) parsing most of the underlying meaning of #RMS’s language. They project meaning instead of interpreting what RMS actually says.My point’s, RMS’strouble articulating his points clearly enough to write essays like he does. You have to be a very attentive and careful reader to parse his intended meaning. The letter’s no examples cited.

@halcek @fluxx Halcek, I've seen a number of arguments that boil down to "what they said is not what they really mean." That's a very tricky path to go down. When you separate the "meaning" from the literal words, it frees the writer from all responsibility and places all fault with the reader. But when you write, "For lunch, I invited the strippers, John and Jane," is it really the responsibility of the reader to understand that you actually invited 4 people instead of 2?

@somnius @fluxx No my argument is not what #RMS said is not what he means. My argument is people reading it are glazing over, and not comprehending basic English grammar.Any philosophical, or thought-provoking piece requires careful comprehension of the English language first to understand it, because it has a meaning bellow the surface. This is called 'close reading'. I feel like many (native) speakers of English don't comprehend the meaning of English very well. See https://sterling-archermedes.github.io/

@halcek @somnius Tbh, I don't feel like this discussion is getting us anywhere here.

@fluxx @somnius Did you read Stallman's actual texts yourself? Relying on 3rd parties is a sure way to get sucked into a lie.It works like this everywhere: here, in politics, in academia, in marketing. Relying on mediated, rather than primary discourse is a sure way to get bamboozled.People usually project meaning onto things, rather than interpret meaning. We shall be aware of this. That's how propaganda's born in all spheres of life.Incurious people always kill nuance.

@halcek @fluxx As a person speaking, you should be actively clearing up misunderstandings to say what you mean. If no one says what they actually mean, how can you trust what anyone says? Why should you trust RMS?Taking RMS at his word from posts on his blogs and other sources, outlined here: https://rms-open-letter.github.io/appendix I find what he says to be quite troubling. It's well within the right of folks in the free software movement to decide if they want folks who speak like this to flourish or not.

@halcek Yes. I did. The links in the article are Stallman's archived blog posts. The link I shared links out to things that Stallman, himself, wrote.

@somnius @halcek As someone who argued in RMS's favor the last time and have read a lot of his linked writing, my stance is that he could have come back (preferably not as a leader) iff the community has been consulted with. But he rejoined behind everyone's backs. So the FSF apparently doesn't care if it doesn't represent the entire free software community, it's fine with only having fossbros.

@somnius @halcek If you scroll a bit back on my profile, I was the one who shared the New Left Review interview with him. I definitely think he has good ideas, but he and the FSF should have realized by now that he is no longer fit to represent the free software cause. That said, I have not signed the petition Yet. Those share links and the github hosting put a bad taste in my mouth.
