@aral @khinsenYou're both quite right. I agree. As I see it when it comes to FOSS sustainability (which imho is inherently unsustainable atm) we are dealing with a wicked problem, which can only be solved by a multi-pronged solution. For some projects this might be beneficial, while others be better off with a different mix of sustainability tools-in-the-toolbox.As you may know I focus on #SOSS now, as a model. Sustainable open social systems, having #FOSS as output.https://coding.social

@laurenshof @jdp23I consider the #FEP process as a "best-we-can-manage" at the moment. There is room for a ton of improvement in the grassroots standardization process. What I would be much in favor of is to see more organization around specific themes. The FEP is nice but it is a random collection of bits and pieces collected as best-practices from across the ecosystem.Examples of where decentralized ecosystems focus on specific use cases or verticles are #ForgeFed, Podcasting, and Forums.

You post a new top-level toot on the fediverse, then see that it contains spelling errors. No one has interacted with the toot as yet.You can delete & redraft the toot, effectively sending a new message with updated text, or you can edit the existing msg and send an update across the fediverse. There may be different social impact, but also technical issue like bandwidth consumption. And what is energy cost?Which action is better and should be a best-practice in this situation? And why?

@tyil yes, great advice. I do this myself a lot. Esp. in more stressful situations where there's real weight to a discussion, waiting a while with a direct reply is a great way to come back later with a much more measured, nuanced and constructive response.

@silverpill @pepper0Don't know Autonomi, react to more general point:- robust #p2p technologies exist- there's no large uptake of p2p (social) networksIn 2017 investigating promising decentralized tech, most noteworthy was the landscape of tombstones of long-dead forgotten projects where people pumped in years of coding.I came to #ActivityPub as best positioned for broad adoption and 'universal social networking' (bit disillusioned now).Following holistic adoption approach is crucial.

@silverpill @pepper0 With #Solid project you saw a "Just create intricate #LinkedData specs, omit appealing to dev community, target biz directly. And broad adoption will come".With #ActivityPub we saw "Let's have these initial specs be the basis, and throw it into this grassroots ecosystem, and vNext will rise from that".#DAT project saw cryptography and compsci experts going deep in the tech, without considering how it would be adopted, implicit "code it and they will come".Etcetera.

@silverpill @pepper0 I made a similar case to @erlend and @zicklag some time ago, relating to #Muni town's #p2p technologies. If one is content with small uptake, and maybe earning sustainable income from that for a small team, or even a decent SMB or mid-sized business, then all is well.If ones ambition level is larger than that, things are a whole different matter, and much more forces need to be accounted for.At Social coding commons the #FSDL considers these..https://coding.social/introduction/#free-software-development-lifecycle

@silverpill @pepper0 @erlend @zicklag Aside: I recently gave #FSDL double meaning depending on context..Fediverse social development lifecycle: Sociosphere. #SX inter-personal perspective, Social web, social experiences, socio-cultural impact, fediverse developer ecosystem, fediverse #culture.Free software development lifecycle: Technosphere. Free software movement, #SOSS initiatives, service / solution development. Ecosystem formation in grassroots environments, cocreation.

How happy is the marriage between #ActivityPub and #ActivityStreams? 🤔https://github.com/w3c/activitypub/issues/522#poll #fediverse #socialweb

@silverpill @mariusorI don't think you can say that. AS has more uses than with AP. I know of at least:- Linked Data Event Streams- DCAT-AP and DCAT-AP Feeds- Linked Data Event NotificationsAnd as for #ActivityStreams relation to #ActivityPub I'd say - and it is the argument I make in the GH issue - that we have a vocabulary without good grammar and language rules. The AS social primitives are loose words, and you can construct any gibberish with them and try to make it popular slang.

The fediverse is a new type of social network that is built by people themself, by adding their own servers and applications, so that the network organically grows. Millions of people from across the globe are thus able to find each other on the basis of shared passions and interests, and navigate a rich tapestry of inclusive communities to discuss and collaborate, and to express their freedom and creativity.#ActivityPub #fediverse

Suppose run-amok #capitalism is a car model. Then what is its engine that keeps it going on its destructive rampage? And what fuel does it run on?Is it the #internet revved up to full overload? Is it high octane #data, that keeps the pistons running like crazy?According to a Harvard study, FOSS contributes ~9 trillion to hypercapitalist #economy. What then is #FOSS in this analogy? Free turbochargers?https://www.heise.de/en/news/Harvard-study-Open-source-has-an-economic-value-of-8-8-trillion-dollars-10322643.html

@tyil perhaps. On the reasoning that copyleft provides sufficient protection. Everything before the code exists is there for grabs. The R&D, the insights, the experimental research. It is a low-fruit garden of Eden. No need for companies to do any of that. Just do the product dev. Add AI in the mix and everything is gobbled up regardless of license. I am a long-time fan and promotor of FOSS. FOSS the software, but also FOSS the struggling beautiful people, who continue to walk away with nothing.

@strypey @nb @lightone Thank you, Daniel. Indeed, I think that is not the case unfortunately, with a bunch of other initiatives going, and uncertainty on my income sources in near future.

#ThoughtProvoker :blobhyperthink:#FreeSoftware world is rich with many realms to wander. Coding adventures ahead there is wizardry, and weird religious quests.#FOSS has their own shrines and temples where devs and maintainer pilgrims visit and pray for humble gifts from Heaven. They are the FOSS service providers and funding institutions that dot the landscape. Often far away and mystic. Dealing out breadcrumbs and tokens to keep believers fed and happy, faith held high. They do their best!

@silverpill💕 I'm so thankful for all the work to the #FEP process you have 🎁 gifted this entire year. You are one of those who help the #fediverse shine, aggregating building blocks, paving pathways with grassroots #ActivityPub tiles, where only raw substrate of ✨ possibilities existed before. This "2026 edition" I hope we can walk, all like you, in unison on a singular cause. Towards sunnier #SocialWeb futures. Grow strong to face a gloomy #SocialNetworking landscape of offline society.#SX
