our society leaves adults the freedom to do what they want, as long as it does not harm others or society in general. of course, in a good society, there are always resources and supports available for people who realise that they made the wrong choices.detransitioners should get all the help that they want and need.people recovering from addiction should get all the help that they want and need.so should people who have a child they realise they cannot raise (on their own). and people going through a divorce. and people who blew all their money on lotteries. and people who got plastic surgery.but taking away people’s right to make bad choices is infantilising them. it is a restriction of freedom. it also prevents them from making good choices.unless, of course, detransition is the only “good” choice you can imagine.

and just to be clear, “but people need to know of the potential complications and side-effects” is not an argument against on-demand treatment, and it is also not, nor has it ever been, the point of assessments.a surgeon talks you through the whole thing during your pre-surgery appointments.a doctor tells you all about a medication upon prescribing it. a pharmacist is happy to tell you more when giving you the medication.that is the “informed” part of “informed consent”. and it does not require giving anyone the right to withhold permission.

honestly while we’re at it, let’s just revive #XMPP too, why shouldn’t we? because that’s the thing about free software, isn’t it? you can’t kill it. it’s literally not possible as long as the code is still available somewhere.so bringing THAT back at the same time as they try to repeat their strategy, that would really drive the point home, wouldn’t it?so, who here knows any good XMPP servers? or is the kind of person who can just set one up on a whim?

my friends. mates. comrades. colleagues. buddies.i do not need distro advice. i have been through the list. i have not needed distro advice since i went along with a handful of friends literally making our own distro in like 2006. my first linux was gentoo — yes, stage 1. i have had SuSe because it was the only that came with out-of-the-box ISDN support that allowed me to go online with a fresh install. i have had arch, and our handmade distro was an arch fork. i have done LFS a handful of times; i have done LFS on an alpha; i have done LFS on an ancient PC with ISA cards. i have even had NetBSD on a 32-bit SPARC. i have had OpenBSD too, on a Jornada.i have had a collection of grml rescue CDs. i have had debian (and learned that nothing breaks as reliably as debian does). my first ubuntu was, what, 8.3? i have had fedora too.please just take 3 seconds to consider that the person you are talking to may not, in fact, be a bloody beginner who has never done a manual kernel configuration, tinkered with package manager source code, or repaired their hardware with a soldering iron.this kind of behaviour is exactly why i eventually stopped engaging with the FLOSS community at all. any kind of communication, any kind of venting or asking questions is seen as proof that you have no idea what the fuck you are even doing.this is why FLOSS is a bunch of white men who will frown at anyone who admits not knowing something or having made a mistake. y'all make damn sure to show the rest of us that doing these things means we don't belong. means we're not as good, as smart, and as knowledgeable as you. means any unsolicited advice you pull out off your literal ass will be valuable as gold to us.this is why i left. 10 years later, nothing has changed. not one thing. i livepost my hysterical experiences after my mint system got completely fucked up by doing an upgrade, and y'all swarm me to ask if i have considered trying a distro that isn't aimed at beginners?i have, actually. in two thousand and fucking FOUR. there's a reason that i didn't ASK.

@lore probably part of the reason theyre often seen as unnecessary is because theyre marketed as good for movies and games, when their real strength is readability of text. i mean i will never be able to afford something like that but it would make my life SO much easier

so i see the “CW as a subject line” crowd feeling very marginalised by the “CW as CW crowd” and i wonderhas anyone considered- renaming the “CW” field into “title”- making “hide content behind title” a checkbox- and offering users 3 options to choose from in settings: “hide all”, “as specified”, and “show all”? this would intuitively incentivise users to put those subject lines on anything longer than a sentence or two, would make everything nice and accessible for people who struggle with filtering content for what they want to read, while still allowing for the full functionality as content warning(and somehow, we would then have come full circle and returned to a blogpost format.)#mastodon #cw
