i despise the argument that adults need to be thoroughly vetted for medical transition because surely, people need to be protected from making such a life-altering decision too quickly, or for the wrong reasons?they do not, actually. people have the freedom to make an untold number of radical, life-changing decisions with potentially serious consequences at the drop of a hat, and for all the wrong reasons. we call this “being an adult”.and the process of checking yourself to make sure you’re not making the wrong choices is called “responsibility”. and every adult has the right to decide for themselves whether to act responsibly or not.

alcohol, for example, is perfectly legal and there are not currently any large-scale movements to prohibit it, even though an uncountable number of adults (and youths, even) drink irresponsibly, at grave consequences to themselves – and sometimes even others.much more serious consequences than growing boobs or a beard.so why would people need to be “protected” from taking HRT, which, if they keep it up for several months, their appearance may change slightly, but not from alcohol, where one evening of bad choices can see multiple people dead?

adults are also allowed to have as much sex as they want, with whomever they want, and without protection, if they want.you can go out one evening, meet a guy, and go “let’s make a baby” and even though that choice may literally ruin your life, nobody is seriously arguing to put sex or pregnancy behind a barrier of months-long therapy and assessment procedures.

or look at marriage. you can marry a total stranger on a whim.you can marry a person you know will make you miserable.you can buy a house together, invest all your money into your spouse, only to have them ditch you for no fucking reason.are we supposed to protect people from marrying too quickly or for the wrong reasons?

our society leaves adults the freedom to do what they want, as long as it does not harm others or society in general. (and sometimes, regretfully, it allows that, too.)the things that are prohibited or regulated are those that come with a heavy risk of harming others or society at large.so which of these, exactly, is medical transition?

of course, in a good society, there are always resources and supports available for people who realise that they made the wrong choices.detransitioners should get all the help that they want and need.people recovering from addiction should get all the help that they want and need.so should people who have a child they realise they cannot raise (on their own). and people going through a divorce. and people who blew all their money on lotteries. and people who got plastic surgery.but taking away people’s right to make bad choices is infantilising them. it is a restriction of freedom. it also prevents them from making good choices.unless, of course, detransition is the only “good” choice you can imagine.

honestly i used to feel like it is just restrictive and unfair, but the older i get, the more i am bothered by the infantilising aspect of it all.just let me make my own fucking choices. i have made so many bad choices in my life, i deserve the freedom to make some good ones, too.

and just to be clear, “but people need to know of the potential complications and side-effects” is not an argument against on-demand treatment, and it is also not, nor has it ever been, the point of assessments.a surgeon talks you through the whole thing during your pre-surgery appointments.a doctor tells you all about a medication upon prescribing it. a pharmacist is happy to tell you more when giving you the medication.that is the “informed” part of “informed consent”. and it does not require giving anyone the right to withhold permission.
