honestly while we’re at it, let’s just revive #XMPP too, why shouldn’t we? because that’s the thing about free software, isn’t it? you can’t kill it. it’s literally not possible as long as the code is still available somewhere.so bringing THAT back at the same time as they try to repeat their strategy, that would really drive the point home, wouldn’t it?so, who here knows any good XMPP servers? or is the kind of person who can just set one up on a whim?

years of commercial messengers and yet no real-word use found for giving big companies my phone number just to send my friends the same kind of texts and emoji as i used to do via a server run by a friend that i knew and trusted not to mishandle my data

@skye For people not afraid to self host, but also don't want to be bothered too much by it, yunohost can be a good solution. It's a server OS that comes with a webinterface where you can do basically all you need to. The goal of the project can be seen as "try to be for servers what desktop environments were for pc's". It comes with mail and xmpp by default. This is what I personally use.For people who are just looking for a server, nixnet.services is ran by @amolith and hosts several services, including an xmpp server; https://docs.nixnet.services/XMPP If I weren't running my own, this is most probably where I would be.

@skye xmpp does not need reviving from the grave because it never got there :) But more public servers would be nice ting to see. Dont be afraid. xmpp moved forward. now with cool clients, voip, e2e encryption and more. Not to mention tiny resource footprint on the server.

@ilja @skye I've heard that Snikket is also a great option for self-hosting. Their whole goal is making XMPP as simple and user-friendly as possible :comfy: https://snikket.org

@ilja @skye but yes, you're more than welcome to sign up on my server with one of my domains :comfy: Ilja already linked my docs, but this page also gives a brief overview of both my server and some other good recommendations. Anything in category A would be a great choice (but I do have some pretty epic domains 👀)https://providers.xmpp.net
