@comrade_lecter In another part he compares "attraction is not action" to "beliefs are not action" which I think is wrong. "I feel like killing you but I won't because that would be unethical" is different from "I believe that I ethically ought to kill you, but won't because <some reason>."

@comrade_lecter What I'm looking for with this post is anyone who feels like censoring the book would be silencing them. "Dumb anti-cs don't want books that challenge their narrative" is close, but it doesn't actually imply that they like the book, just that they dislike anti-cs.

@comrade_lecter I am surprised that you would take that stance. It's changing the animal "for its own good" without any input from the animal. If you do that to a human, then the burden shouldn't be on the patient to prove that they would be negatively impacted by having the choice made for them. Maybe we don't have any good alternatives, but it's still not good to be in the position of needing to make that decision.Only partly related: are these people against sterilization generally, or only the specific methods of spaying and neutering?

@comrade_lecter Yes it is. But I don't think it's baffling that people would want to make marginally fewer choices on the animal's behalf.I can accept that realistically some form of sterilization is needed (possibly one that doesn't affect hormones), that animals will not be able to understand the implications, and that this situation is not ideal. What would be ideal? I really don't know.

@comrade_lecter I am pretty committed (not a hard rule, more like a general principle) to never say something like "what your label *actually* means is *this*" - not even in more extreme hypothetical cases like "I'm pro-c because I believe that all sex should be illegal." At most I'll say "you are using that label in a very atypical way."

@comrade_lecter I believe they can factor into some people's identities, but more importantly I don't think they do a good job of organizing particular sets of beliefs, which is why this conversation happened.

@comrade_lecter We still have a lot of margin left before we hit my extreme hypothetical example. Until that point, I think my way is more accurate by encouraging people to better represent their opponents' views.Though I should emphasize that this is "my way" and although I obviously approve of it and think it's better, I don't want to force it on anyone.
