I'm trying Mastodon for the third time now. I really want it to stick. Trying to build out my #UX community. Suggestions/pointers to other #UXDesigners are welcome. #UI #UXDesign. If you're into UX and follow me, I'll follow back.

Let's be a part of building this community out. If you find someone interesting boost them (even if you normally aren't the type of person that 'boosts') It'll help us find a community easier. What mastodon needs right now is network size, let's work to build it.

#mastodon peeps. I'm a semi-retired UX designer and there are some trivial #UX 'bugs' in your web interface that could use some fixing. Is there a way to suggest UI improvements? (e.g. github issues?)

@grigs That's the big question. I'm starting to think of instances (servers) more as SMTP hosts. You pick one that is well run and reliable. If it happens to have a bunch of people you like, great! But to pick the instance with the MOST people you like seems..... hard.

Here's another #UX foible on @Mastodon adding a #hashtag to your profile. The restriction is that you can't add a hashtag you haven't previously used: fair enoughWhere on this screen is this explained? Classic UX example of 'the error text isn't helpful". All you need to do is change this text to "Featured hashtags must be used before adding to your profile". If there is ALSO a parsing error, fine, expand the text or improve the error handing to support both strings.

@ondra Fair enough, but then just put the documentation string right over the input box and not make it an error reply. There is plenty of room...

@grigs @tkadlec @ondra@unextro.net @nolan Tim, just think of the server like an SMTP server (Gmail, hotmail, etc) It's just your 'host' that you use. As @ondra points out, it really boils down to moderator (who can boot people) a code of conduct, and reliability

It's clear mastodon.social is huge and can get a bit overwhelmed with traffic. The "right thing to do" is to pick another, smaller instance but it's so fear inducing! Which one to pick? What if it goes under? I know, it SHOULDN'T be a big deal but for novices, this is clearly a problem #UX #UXdesign

@jyasskin But that's been sold as a strength, e.g. if I join an instance that takes moderation seriously and boots spammers, we won't have a problem. But if an instance *is* just for spammers, it's easy to ignore the entire domain

@jyasskin @ellen I see your point but the only alternative is the Twitter model (which seems to work even less effectively) What I find hopeful about the federated model is that if it really did get that bad, an instance could flip to default banned and have members nominate new instances. Again, nothing is perfect (I'm sure there are holes) My point is the the federated model at least feels slightly better than the alternative.

Also *stop* saying that migration is easy! It is most certainly not. Yes, you can move your account without too much trouble but you lose all of your content. That's a big deal! It's the number one reason I'm being so slow in picking a new instance. I *don't* want to move any time soon. #mastodon #UX

Stop blaming new users for being confused by the #fediverse! This isn't obvious or easy! It sounds like out of touch programmers that don't understand the effect of confusing #UX

@Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo Oh, I totally agree that it's "good enough" and works surprisingly well. My ranty post was in response to a post HERE on Mastodon, whining about the people complaining about the UX here, claiming it really isn't that bad.

@Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo We're all good! I just get grumpy when people claim something like the fediverse is easy to understand and don't want to take steps to improve it. I'm vocal here as I want Mastodon to get better

@ondra @simonblackley That is a very fair point. I'd like to back up and examine WHY I want it.1. Historical: some questions/replies contain valuable info I want to keep2. Social: Recall who replied to me on a topic3. Validation, others can see what I've posted (at least recently) this clearly fades with time.My biggest problem with 'just download the CSV is that it just hides it away in a separate app (and is MUCH harder to browse)

@ondra @f_beaudet I've discussed this in previous posts:1) At the signup page have a clear pick a server option (this exists on some now)2) Have a strong guideline how how servers present themselves: how they are funded. managed, goals, moderation so you can determine if the server is well run3) Have a suggested 3-5 servers for people that don't want to think (LOTS to talk about here, I get it, this would be hard)

How do I control the #hashtags that show up in my Home feed? I can't see a list anywhere. It appears hashtags on my profile imply I want to follow them? This is creating TOO much content. I want a home feed of only posts from people I follow...

@slightlyoff Given the hammering that Mastodon is getting with new users, I can't help but think of your comments about React and how it's likely causing so much pain with the extra server overhead.

@bigelow @alex @slightlyoff Performance is always a tricky (and emotional) issue. I'm sure there is LOT to unpack. I'm just saying that mastodon.social, as web page is quite pokey atm and I wonder if it's *all* federation overhead. (However, I don't wish to discount Alex's experience in this at all)
