Stop blaming new users for being confused by the #fediverse! This isn't obvious or easy! It sounds like out of touch programmers that don't understand the effect of confusing #UX

@scottjenson I agree there is a learning curve, but I’m getting irritated at big shots on Twitter complaining loudly about how Mastodon is “too complicated”. Because no one owns it, there is no big budget being put into UX. It’s amazing it works as well as it does given that! So there is a tradeoff there — maybe it’s worth it to put in a little extra work to obtain an extra degree of autonomy?

@Suzyanalyst1 @scottjenson I would say that a usable product is a mark of respect for the community. Developers can take pride in their work when everyone can use it, regardless of their technical ability. From my own #IxD research on government services, I know that a significant part of the public struggles with basic interaction – drop-down lists, expanding/collapsing elements, or UI jargon. There's lots of talk about visual accessibility but not cognitive accessibility. Why exclude people?

@PKYo @scottjenson Yeah, I just don’t know how much it’s fair to expect from a few people who seem to have done a lot of the underlying work on a volunteer basis, as I understand it.

@Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo Oh, I totally agree that it's "good enough" and works surprisingly well. My ranty post was in response to a post HERE on Mastodon, whining about the people complaining about the UX here, claiming it really isn't that bad.

@Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo We're all good! I just get grumpy when people claim something like the fediverse is easy to understand and don't want to take steps to improve it. I'm vocal here as I want Mastodon to get better

@scottjenson @Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo It's fascinating though, how people arriving from #Twitter often immediately complain as it is the only option over there. And often as the #fediverse didn't even exist before they discovered it a couple hours ago. However, the big difference is that here anyone can do something about it.The #UX can definitely be improved but there are limits to how close it can get to the centralized platforms. And some will keep complaining about those very limits.

@ondra @scottjenson @Suzyanalyst1 @PKYo I think it's relevant to point out this isn't a business & there's no customer service desk. It's a community. We're trying to build something by helping newbies or volunteering to mod the code. It's fair to be frustrated by new things, but some comments sound a bit like "your product isn't meeting the consumer where they're at" and yeah, because it's not a product and you're not its consumer.

@ondra @scottjenson @PKYo @Suzyanalyst1 agree and disagree a bit. we as a community can listen and act without financial stakeholders being involved. this is some ways gives us an advantage. but we also have to put dx on a high priority as that buy in is critical.
