@linuxtldr I have previously been critical (not a fan of posts you have to click a link to find out what they're about or articles with poor or no introductions explaining the significance of the content--so often the how to do something before the why you'd want to). Only fair to acknowledge this exemplary work! 👏

@admin @DarrylAnderson @brianklaas Greetings from Ireland, where the police are unarmed because they don't need to be. Your position is not remotely persuasive. You didn't even read the article. Your mass stabbings and mass acid attacks are ridiculous. Weird isn't it that such things almost never happen in countries with strict gun controls. It's the guns.A friend in the US gave his only kid a gun. Kid got depressed one day and killed himself with it. Chances of happening here? Remote.

@davoloid I don't disagree, but in Ireland and Kenya and India and many other places the term British values has some baggage. My Brexit-voting English sister in law looked completely blank when I asked "Did you consider the impact on Northern Ireland?"She believes her British values have majority support (Telegraph reader, Tory, Empire exceptionalist etc).It seems British values aren't universally agreed. Yet. But we live in hope.

@BigTittyBimbo And the monarchy, House of Lords, leasehold tenure, titles of nobility, hereditary legislators, established church, empire medals, impunity for crimes committed in army uniform (incl against civilians), violation of the rights of Chagos islanders etc, some of the feudalism has gone on for rather longer? The Post Office scandal is bagatelle in the grand scheme of things. Could the British be waking up? 🤔

@futurebird You want another example? (The world isn't short of them I know).I bought my late mother a vastly expensive radio as it was the only one I could find with a remote control with buttons for a handful of stations. After her death I used it mainly via an app. This, and the remote, stopped working after a couple years... Until I agreed to a new privacy policy & new terms and conditions. I had no choice. They were coercive, exploitative and should be illegal. What are the chances? 0?

@divVerent @kravietz Running SSH on your own server is illegal? Got a credible citation for that?

@divVerent @kravietz Your assertion that an IP address is "generally considered PII" is entirely false and you cannot provide a citation from any credible source to support that proposition.I suggest you look up some definitions of PII and then consider the many reasons why an IP address is never included.Better not to spread misinformation.

@divVerent @kravietz An IP address does NOT identify a person. At best it identifies a device or an Internet connection at a particular moment. It itself reveals nothing about a specifically identifiable person.I suggest you also look up exemptions from application of GDPR. Individuals and entities not subject to GDPR are not "technically" breaking the law when it simply doesn't apply to them.

@divVerent @kravietz A username in a log file with an associated IP address do NOT, in themselves, constitute personally identifiable Information.Even if they did it's not a given that the GDPR applies. An introductory course will clarify. There are many freely available.

@daniel Why include Signal? It's supported by a non-profit foundation and is usable without surrendering one's privacy. It's secure, can be used both anonymously and without payment. Not remotely in the same category as either Amazon or WhatsApp (and many others, Google, Apple etc).Because American = bad? That just isn't true.

@Sine_Nomine @alderik @signalapp You missed the point. Google is imposing Gemini on users without consent. Using Signal (I do) is essentially irrelevant.

@Nonilex 10,000 Americans moved to Ireland this year (as of a few weeks ago, will be thousands more by year end). Hundreds of thousands more have moved to the rest of the EU.Most are likely educated and Democrat voters. Nevertheless, my money is on political erasure of the GOP, following the example of their fellow-travellers the British Conservative Party.

@SuperDicq @itsfoss Why are you trying to police what's posted here? Did you read "Linux and open source software portal"?Does Obsidian run on Linux?Yes.Is it free? Yes. Is it necessary to share data with "them" or indeed anyone else? No. Plenty of people run Obsidian on Linux, as well as Joplin and other things. Get over it.

@SuperDicq @itsfoss GNU/Linux?Ah, you haven't grown up yet. And then you make a risible assertion about a UI being designed to trick people into giving up control of their computer (in effect sharing data) but you claim you made no assertion about sharing data.Muted for Dunning-Kruger exhibitionism. Bye. 🤡
