it also makes the same mistake as the wheel of time series where it wants you to care about like some twenty different main characters in the very first episode

I'm fine with having a pile of different POV characters but you gotta start me out small and slowly ramp up, jeeze. like star trek had huge ensemble casts but they still only picked one or two POV characters each for the A and B stories each episode

I'm kinda mad about how google used to be such a useful tool and now it's been more or less ruined by an advertising economy that it was the principal actor in creating

whenever twitter makes a bunch of its users angry we get a new wave of activity on the federal verse and all the new mastodon users engage in the primary hobby of a new mastodon user, which is listing all of the reasons why mastodon doesn't work. it's real fun

yeah I know my car's got a window that don't roll all the way up and I have to replace the wall of packing tape that covers the gap every other month. still driving it, though.

gotta say I am kind of getting bored of the 'furries are the only people doing anything interesting in vr' attitude that you see from furry commenters on basically any vr-related news media. I think a lot of furries get kind of tunnel-visioned into their own communities and as a result lose any sense of awareness of the world that their cohort is not directly involved in

like yes, furries are doing some very cool things but furry cons by attendance are still significantly smaller than anime cons, and the weebs colonized vrchat before we did

that tweet that elf sternberg posted that's just breathlessly going 'look! furries invented sign language in VR and developed hand tracking' while making a snide comment about how meta is struggling to catch up to furries that got two thousand likes, just blithely unaware that finger tracking is a specific feature of the meta quest 2 that vrchat only just started beta testing. but no, furries invented it because it was a video of a furry demonstrating it

meta's horizon worlds has plenty of room for dunks upon, but meta's quest and quest 2 are vr headsets that can get people into VR for significantly lower cost than any PCVR setup, since they can be used as standalone devices that don't need a desktop PC

They don't interest me as a user both because they require that you be in the facebook ecosystem, and because of their pedigree as oculus devices - palmer luckey is a fascist shitbag, which immediately put me off the brand, and getting bought by zuck only compounded that distaste for me. but, like it or not, the quest has the lowest barrier to entry for vr, and a lot of kids' first exposure to vr is going to be through the quest

been seeing some of my artist friends stress about how they are going to get their art seen in a post-twitter world. Twitter was a very useful tool for artists for a while, and because of that, I think a lot of us might have gotten into the habit of thinking that it was the only tool. But I also think its usefulness dropped off rapidly once they started playing around with algorithmic timelines and a lot of people who used to enjoy easy reach found they had to work a lot harder to be seen.

I used to make a webcomic and spent some time learning about what causes things to go viral, and came up with a few private rules for audience building, most of which I think still work. The two biggest ones were "find a parade and walk in front of it," and "your work is the best advertisement for your work." Twitter wasn't the only parade. I got a lot of traction on Reddit, and there's a huge furry subreddit now that's will generally upvote just about anything.

The AIDA marketing funnel is tacky as hell but it's worth understanding and building your strategy around. Have a central place to direct people once they've become aware of your work, that you are in control of. Make sure there's an obvious way for people to sign up to a mailing list.A lot of artists use telegram announcement channels, which are great because furries are all over telegram and it's very easy for people who subscribe to them to forward messages to their friends.

Twitter (and more broadly, social media in general) is useful only for the Attention/Awareness stage of the AIDA funnel and most people who are aware of your work are not going to move to Interest/Decision/Action, which is why I am not particularly stressed about the death of Twitter. I think most artists are probably more worried about their dopamine hit than the lost revenue. If you have an audience already and you're losing money, look at how you can fix the IDA stages.

Are you selling things people actually want to buy? Are you contextualizing your products in in such a way that makes it easy for your audience to see themselves using/owning them? Are people actually buying shit to hang on their walls? When I tabled at furry cons, people weren't really interested in prints, but I couldn't keep stickers in stock. These days I try not to waste time with anything I couldn't see people wanting to use.
