Finally finished 3 Body Problem on Netflix. Holy. Crap.I am insanely impressed by how well they pulled this off. The portrayal of the wallfacers - and the unveiling of the consequences of simply being named one - was handled insanely well. I can not wait until next season. I legitimately feel the same way I did when each of the original books ended. That is a tough trick to pull off.

@ZachWeinersmith You say "poor" when I think you mean "resourceful". Too many of our sensibilities are handed down to us from on high by people who work hard to separate themselves from "commoners". As if those people on high - lazy, shiftless, gold brickers who, by dint of luck of birth, believe they have a right to tell everyone else how to live as they exploit them to support their lavish lifestyles - have any taste or idea of what is good at all.

@futurebird We're still discovering the full range of what's happening int he gut biome, but I suspect it's very similar to garden soil. Our bodies can produce some of the enzymes and acids necessary to break down foods, but it;s clear the flora we carry in our guts contributes significantly - perhaps even to the point where they do the majority of the work. It makes sense - complex molecules like starches and proteins are more easily broken down by microflora into gut digestible molecules.

@sue We called ourselves "Web Masters" and "Web Mistresses", but often left off the redundant "of the Dark Arts" bit.

@stux Every time you mention his name, a demon gets their wings. The man is popular because no one will shut up about him. Deny him attention and he withers.

If you're no longer able to provide adequate support to your customers, you must hire more support staff. If you can't afford to hire support staff, you must raise your prices. If your customer base won't let you raise your prices, your business simply is not viable. Turning to cheap off-shored or AI-backed support options is not adequate, and it demonstrates to your customers how little you think of them. And only defers the inevitable collapse of your business.

So much enshittification is driven by investors who only see the business as a spreadsheet, not as productive workers and appreciative customers. If a business is run by investors - and sole prop owners are investors - it will eventually lead to enshittification, whether a huge corporation or a small main street business. Especially when that huge corp buys that small business. Worker-owned cooperatives have different incentives, which make them a better option for communities.

Small business owners expect a big return. They eventually want to retire. They figure they take on all the risk, they should get an outsized reward. When their workers demand to be treated more fairly, the owners often grumble about all that risk and often use it as a reason to deny that fairness. Whenever I hear a small business owner complain about the risk they took on, I shrug. That was *your* choice. It doesn't give you an excuse to not treat your workers fairly.

Put every major business decision to a vote. Assign coordinator duties to a handful of people - they facilitate collaboration on your corporate vision and are the keepers of that vision while contributing to it in their areas of expertise / interest (e.g. finance, product, support, sales, etc.)Instead of an owner or even a GM, have a General Coordinator - the ultimate keeper of the over all corporate vision that the other coordinators work with.

Keep the company small - outsource some functions to other, local cooperatives, as much as you can and accept work from them as well. Votes don't have to be unanimous but, the smaller the team, the more your should work toward unanimity. It's easier to get there with 30 people than 150, for example. Hiring and firing is not really a thing. You may need to vote to kick someone out of the co-op in extreme situations. You may need to vote to bring someone new in occasionally.

ICP is a term common in marketing because, secretly, all marketers are juggaloes.

@mycotropic They say they're in marketing. If you press, you'll learn what role they play - marketing analyst, events coordinator, etc. To be honest, I tend to like the people who do the actual marketing work - and I'm occasionally one of them. It's the pressure from executives to, basically, lie and exaggerate that gives these folks such a bad name. If you lean into it... yeah, it's kind of soul killing. When marketing is honest communication and education, it's excellent.

@mycotropic Dead right. The problem isn't marketing, it's the push for endless financial growth at any cost. If the choice is doing something that feels somewhat slimy to you - it's just a little lie, it's not like you're selling crack to school kids (an actual justification I have heard) - and losing your job, you may just hold your nose. Next time, they push your further. Repeat until you either leave, or become one of them. It's a sieve for sociopaths, as are all power hierarchies.
