@rysiek I really hope a live TV show or convention invites a Republican on, applies standard make up preshow, and then conversationally asks them if they can sing a bit of the national anthem to prove they know it. Of course, a sheriff is on standby just off-stage/screen....

@cazabon @jerry I don't think I've seen a UK sink *without* an overflow: kitchen or bathroom.

The year is 2031, in the UK TV broadcasts are no longer a thing as it's all streaming now (https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2022/12/broadband-woes-as-bbc-plan-to-switch-off-terrestrial-uk-tv-by-2030.html ), all non-mobile telephony services are VOIP and then something happens to Telehouse North (one of the UK's main internet connection points). The mobile networks are overwhelmed with everyone switching to using them for everything - and even then, they have problems with unavailable services, failing routing and multiple retries. No news availability causes panic...

The problem with Matt at Automattic ( #WordPress ) saying WPEngine doesn't contribute much back to @WordPress despite "both companies being worth $0.5billion" (https://techcrunch.com/2024/09/22/matt-mullenweg-calls-wp-engine-a-cancer-to-wordpress-and-urges-community-to-switch-providers/ - Automattic is closer to $7.5b https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automattic ), Automattic themselves have "only" contributed $225,000 to the PHP language since *2021* - without #PHP, they'll be no WordPress ( https://opencollective.com/phpfoundation ) - about $75k per year: maybe 2 programmers worth..

@foone There was the Sony Mavica which was battery powered and allowed you to make images of floppy disks

I wish laptop manufacturers would make laptops with a small - say 10mins worth - removable battery instead of the honking 4hrs+ ones. Why?I'm guessing most people use their laptops with the power cable connected and so only need the battery if the cable falls out. But keeping it mains powered slowly kills the battery. Lighter, cheaper and more environmentally friendly laptop for the win.

@futurebird Yeah I hated the pots and pans banging showboating. Just thinking of the extremely tired healthcare workers just trying to get a few minutes more rest before they start their nightshift, ones just finished trying to recover or those having a day off.. I still don't know how it was meant to help or encourage anyone.

@futurebird @lnlyisol Yep, it's getting really annoying. Searched on DuckDuckGo and Google last week for "ds2015xs jellyfin": they suggested multiple pages of results: about installing Jellyfin on most models of Synology - but I Included that model number for a very specific reason (those guides don't work on it): had to manually check handful of results to make sure.Searched on Kagi and just ~3 results all mentioning that model number and all going "guides don't work, haven't managed myself"

@stux For a moment, I thought I might know them (used to work for one of King's original founders in another business), but no - not a founder or part of the team who made "Kjng King".

@foone They are called Discs if they are spun anti-clockwise ("as you would write a 'c'") and Disk if clocKwise. I'm sure @lowqualityfacts would back me up on this.

"Oh you are in the UK: you have to prove your age via one of these methods:Credit card - oh, that was declined for some reason although you approved it on your phoneBy email address - oh, you use an unique email address for everything so we can't find you in our list of email addressesBy SMS: oh, your provider doesn't support the 18+ indicatorBy connecting your bank account to us: What do you mean F No!?"So I'm unable to prove I'm in my 40s because I take a modicum of security.

As one of my (white) parents is an immigrant, according to this ethnicity survey I actually fall into "Other" as there is no option for "Mixed white" (or even non-UK/Ireland/Roma white)

@stux Ours used to be the same. At least she had the courtesy to make a "mwaa" (there's something moving in my mouth) noise as she came in with it. One time she helpfully brought a small frog back and released it just in front of a filled bookcase. Froggy saw a gap at the skirting board and went for it. That was fun...

@futurebird @noplasticshower Is it possible to block the Temu/Aliexpress domain names at the router or us something like Nextdns? Not a perfect solution (as other sites exist) but might just add enough friction

@ricci You could get the "number" of organisations (actually domain names) using each service based on their MX records*: but that'll give you zero insight to the number of actual users (and will omit "personal" accounts on gmail/hotmail etc style domains).(*=There are services about which cache/index common records of most domain names - the list of registered domains for most tlds is public - but I can't recall any atm and on mobile atm so search/checking is hard).Hope it helps a little.

@stux Always. Prerecord. Tech. Demos. Whenever I did tech demos (to clients, public or conventions), it was either a "mocked flow", prerecorded or local server (in the case of multinuser conventions): always assume the wifi, internet, dns etc will become unavailable in the middle of the demo.

@futurebird I know the UK education sector tends to use Shibboleth https://www.ukfederation.org.uk/ / https://www.shibboleth.net/ : I last interacted with it around 15 years ago when it wasn't available for external partners, but I believe that's changed.
