Who came up with the idea of banging pots at 7pm everyday during lockdown? It was "to support the medical workers" but ... it wasn't about that at all was it?Banging pots was a way to scare off demons in the middle ages. Was it organic or more of a government/sponsored thing?Thinking back, feels like a fever dream. There is a big housing tower behind me with balconies and all the people would come out and I could see them. That was fun! Like new year's eve.

I think it was a ritual to announce that you were not dead in your home. "I still live!" that way you knew your neighbors made it through the night even if you'd seen all of those silently flashing ambulances coming and going through the small hours. We didn't know just how bad it was then and my imagination went wild. What if I woke up ... and no one else did? What if the city fell silent?

@futurebird when i was a kid (1970’s), my elderly next door neighbor would fire up the radio at 0600 and bang pots and pans in the yard to scare away birds. our bedroom was next to her house, so you got up shortly after helen got up.

@futurebird I don't remember this at all. Was it regional?

@futurebird I do not recall banging pots and pans as being a popular (or even mentioned?) phenomena at all? I wonder if it was a regional thing.

@futurebird It was perfomative humbug, and needless to say, some of the most appalling, two-faced performative hams I know took part.

@futurebird Yeah I hated the pots and pans banging showboating. Just thinking of the extremely tired healthcare workers just trying to get a few minutes more rest before they start their nightshift, ones just finished trying to recover or those having a day off.. I still don't know how it was meant to help or encourage anyone.

@futurebird seems like someone heard of "casserole" protests and didn't quite get it.

@futurebird it reminds me how during the Quebec student strikes people would bang pots and pans every day at 8pm, this talks about the history of that https://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/may/26/montreal-casseroles-student-protests
