@foone I'm now curious about what the current record is for most electrically inefficient keyboard.

In case anyone needs a decompressor for stuff found in a variety of SNES games by Nintendo, I wrote this when investigating SimCity.I found references calling it LC_LZ2, but I couldn't a full documentation of it, and Lunar Magic is closed source.https://gist.github.com/bbbradsmith/2fa6fcbdb91bfe85bc85f7f20779431a

I wanted to make a list of the kanji used by the Japanese version of SimCity. I got all the 8x8 pixel tiles, but every character is an 8x16 combination of 2 tiles, and there's no centralized pairing data. Could be paired by hand, but this seemed like too much work. (Notes above.)

@foone There's some notes at the bottom of that gist, but a summary:The game stores text as arrays of 8x8 tile indices, so there's no single-character form to inject. You get 24 words for the top half, and then 24 corresponding words for the bottom half, but there's nothing that maps a single index to the two tiles of a pair. (The game's dynamic text only uses the roman alphabet.)...

If you want to play Japanese games, one low-effort high-reward thing you can do is learn Katakana. It's only 50 characters, and it's very often used for words imported from English that you can decipher. It helps most often for menus, or item names.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana

Follow-up, a very short list of useful Japanese words that come up a lot in video games:- はい = Yes- いいえ = No- はじめ/始め = Begin- つづき/続き = Continue- おわり/終わり = End

Iced Tea. My favourite method: add tea + sugar to cold water, put in the fridge for 10+ hours. That's it, very simple.Per 500ml water: 1 teabag (orange pekoe), 30ml sugar. The cold brewing avoids extracting elements that are good for hot tea but leave bitterness when cold.

I've put it up on archive org in case anybody else wants this. I think there are other variations of the MMCD CD-ROM already there, not sure if this specific one was covered. I never remembered the name of it to search before now.https://archive.org/details/mmcd_20240816

Was watching the 1938 Robin Hood and when a particular bit of sword fight happened, I realized I'd seen it a thousand times before in Prince of Persia! Rad!

Binxelview 1.6 released! A simple tool I made years ago for investigating uncompressed image and map formats in old games. Over time it ended up being way more useful than I expected, so I decided it deserved a few new features like persistent options.https://github.com/bbbradsmith/binxelview/releases

@foone I've been looking for a simple open source binary diff program for a long time and this looks like it might fit the bill.

A very rad animation by Jan Švankmajer. Dimensons of Dialogue (1983). A series of pairs, interacting... consuming? (CW: clay nudity.)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-gGpWpra-g
