@mike @gabek we’re all on team open. We may see direct bridges between nostr, atproto (Bluesky), farcaster, and lens but at the moment ActivityPub is the interchange protocol. I think the Mastodon / core fediverse crowd could learn a lot from the farcaster frames, Bluesky’s algorithms and composable moderation, Nostr’s diversity of kinds of social apps on the same user / data.

@serapath @strypey my nos.social nostr app has the same kind of composable moderation guard rails that Bluesky’s primary app and network on ATprotocol has. The technology is remarkably similar even if the user communities have different cultures.

@serapath @strypey both ATprocol and Nostr are based on Secure Scuttlebutt. They’re much more like each other in terms of how the technology and protocol works than anything else. The users might have different cultural norms and values but that’s not what I’m talking about. Neither works much like ActivityPub at all, which is a decade older and designed around a network of all powerful servers vs signed content addressable data structures.

If Trump really does impose broad and high tariffs then it’ll cause domestic inflation. What will it due the USD visa vi other currencies? Will it cause inflation elsewhere?

@wjmaggos the reason I’m pushing a campaign for social media rights is because the protocol and turf distinctions shouldn’t be our focus. Open protocols and a digital commons is the goal. Rights.social

I sat down to interview @karaswisher on my revolution.social podcast where she is scathing in her critique of social media and the executives who founded and run the platforms. https://youtu.be/Lv820srV64k?si=cyx0F35tukcU8UO7

@wjmaggos @decentered yeah there were prototypes and experiments. It would have made the federation and privacy / groups easier but providing a Twitter like experience a lot harder. I think they made the right choice by building ATprotocol.

Substack has changed the world of journalism, making it easy for journalists to directly charge for a newsletter. Now they're growing in to a whole platform with algorithms, video, podcasts, microblogging... I sat down with their CEO Chris Best to talk about it just as they announce they've raised a $100 million in funding, and also their algorithm sent out an antisemitic push notification with a swastika icon.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz2dIgQbPL4

@wjmaggos @onthemedia I mean @blaine made Twitter, the federated twitter over XMPP, and Webfinger which is the core of how identity works in the fediverse. Everyone was aware of prior art. All the core Bluesky people and the consultative group that created the Bluesky research paper were working on decentralized social protocols before @mmasnick wrote protocols not platforms. That essay advocated for the work of many people. It helped tons, but didn’t start things.

@wjmaggos @coachtony yeah I find I’m subscribed to some substacks that frankly I rarely want to read. I know why the creator wants a recurring subscription but I only want or have time for a very limited and occasional engagement.

Medium has been around for so long we might forget it’s important role in the social media ecosystem. @coachtony, CEO of Medium, talked with me about Medium’s evolution, AI, their Reddit like content moderation system, and how they differ from substack. https://youtu.be/ewrc0iPYsq0?si=ODpFyjNSjwOioEVh

@strypey @Wtebbens @lightweight I think building and advocating for privacy perserving age verification is a mistake. Nobody running a commercial service will use it the privacy stuff. We see it with data leaks and how much value platforms could have by having id's and selfies of their users. Having a privacy focused option won't get used but it will justify using the things which destroy user privacy.
