It seems to me the only way to get out of this loop, where a new site with loose rules (in other words, convenient for creators) gets popular, gets noticed, and gets attacked, is with a federated, decentralized protocol. Like email. Or, maybe Mastodon, as a newer example. Nothing exists now that includes PPV functions, though. Would require cryptocurrency to live up to its promises.

So irritated that they skipped booster studies for Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Supposedly very few immunosuppressed people got it because it wasn't available until later on. I couldn't get vaccinated until later on because of my state's shitty distribution decisions. :scream:

@aral it seems they're considering "everyone stores their dara in corporate clouds, where it can be and I'd routinely scanned (for CSAM, wink sink)" as the baseline because that's the convenient route most people take. Except no one really read the TOS they've been relying on, no one truly consented to having their data scanned.

@aral They've accidentally built a serpentine path to the abattoir, and are now surprised that the users are spooked by the sight of a bolt gun.

@izaya Unfortunately what you're doing is basically indistinguishable from malicious actors trying to impersonate a secure site.

@izaya Perhaps a browser extension would work better?

@izaya Well you're up against decades of work by security researchers to prevent a MITM actor from interfering with HTTPS data. Modifying clients is going to be easier.

@izaya The least intrusive option I can think of is what enterprise companies do -- install a local CA on your clients and have your reverse proxy/interceptor use certs signed by that CA to masquerade as the sites you want to disrupt.

@izaya Lots of footguns there, though. Keep that CA private key securely offline!

@wolf480pl HPUX must have adopted that behavior from VAX. Had a heck of a time porting a large complex app from HP to Solaris (back when those were relevant) until I discovered LD_PRELOAD and /usr/lib/0@0.so.

@wolf480pl @0.so. Some of our programmers were insisting that Sun's default behavior (segfaulting) was wrong, that null was a proper way to get a convenient null string.

@neglesaks Leaving aside qualms about BTC, that graph is a great example of misleading y-ranges. The drop was not nearly as drastic as that curve suggests.

@angristan I've been doing this for years now. Issues only in the few occasions when you want your identity shared. Example: setting up rebates from electric utility for buying new thermostats w/ load sensitivity. Or kickstarter projects that want to fulfill though some other site like backerkit.

@angristan One other issue: when you want to engage support over email. Have to make sure you set the right sending address to avoid confusion.

@wolf480pl The Logitech G Pro has these, though on the side instead of on top. Also truly ambidextrous, and my favorite mouse by far.
