Any downside to using a unique email address for each website with a custom domain? (using a catch-all address of course)for ex. : mastodon@mydomain, newsletter@mydomain, git@mydomain, etc

@angristan not to my knowledge. I'm actually thinking about doing it myself. It's a great way to find out who's been selling your personal info 😉

@angristan I've been doing it for years, only downside is when you have to reply to something and need to match the from address. I use a Thunderbird extension that lets me do that though.

@Moon that's the only downside that I've been thinking of so far

@angristan I just end up using + aliases. Sufficient for me for most of the time.I do have some "separate" aliased to the main address where the real inbox is, though.

@Moon @angristan don't recent versions of Thunderbird do that when you configure multiple identities in your account preferences ?I think I've seen that somewhere in action, without an additional extension 🤔

@l4p1n @angristan I have been doing this trick since at least 2010 and have made probably thousands of fake email addresses. On the other hand I almost never need to fake the from address, so it's pretty easy to use the extension that just turns the from address into a freeform text field.

@angristan i’ve been doing this for years and the only downside i’ve noticed is that sometimes I need to reply from an alias which may require creating an account depending on what service you’re using.

@angristanSome e-mail providers (Gandi?) stopped proposing catch-all because it could (does?) multiply the number of spams received, from what I can remember.

@angristan I don't even do catch-all. If a service spams me, I disable the mail address and that's done. If I need it again, I can always enable it again.I've had one or two cases where a provider didn't want to take the address because it had their name in the address. I guess it's a way for them to combat people doing that, which is just a red flag and easily worked-around by just adding a spelling mistake or w/e

@angristan No downsides yet, and I do exactly that for quite some time already. Mostly just pros, because I already had the case where my mail address was leaked and I was able to create a filter rule that blocks mails to that address.

@angristan The only cons I see:1. I use company.name@benpro.fr to contact contact@company.name.tld and they ask me why I use their company name in my mail address. They are a bit surprised :D2. When I reply on KMail or FairEmail I need to specify the From, and sometimes I forgot so I send a reply from my generic <name>@benpro.fr.Otherwise, catch-all is so nice to simply block a leaked address :3(Yeah and I made a typo at that time :D)

@angristan I've been doing this for years now. Issues only in the few occasions when you want your identity shared. Example: setting up rebates from electric utility for buying new thermostats w/ load sensitivity. Or kickstarter projects that want to fulfill though some other site like backerkit.

@angristan One other issue: when you want to engage support over email. Have to make sure you set the right sending address to avoid confusion.

@angristanIt's really good for convenience and possibly beneficial for security and privacy as well! However, from an OPSEC perspective, adversaries may have a reduced search space for guessing the email part of your credentials.E.g., they would know to guess "git@mydomain.com" for attacking your Git provider account.Potential workarounds could involve an intentional misspelling such as "g1t@mydomain.com" for a little extra security or a random address such as "f299iqjwf@mydomain.com" for heightened security (and headache!).I just learned that ProtonMail allows + aliases, which as @l4p1n mentioned is useful, esp. in tandem with other addresses. So you could have "g1t@mydomain.com" with aliases "g1t+hub@mydomain.com" for GitHub, "g1t+lab@mydomain.com" for GitLab, etc. as a solution that combines both multiple addresses and + aliases.
