@NoDoxGregBrady @jb All the recent talk about Russians being so different from us because land people/sea people has made me think about US balkanization more critically than I ever have. Before it was mostly wistfully thinking about beating the Yankees back and never being under the thumb of the puritan empire. But, in this day and age, a free South, or greater Appalachia, or whatever would be a land nation with a huge vulnerable border, surrounded be an unbelievable hungry of horde. Maybe not so simple. Still a compelling vision...

@JoshuaSlocum @lks It's bad out there, especially if you are under 20 right now. I have to disagree about nobody having a clear way out--the national socialists did nearly the same thing in a surprisingly short time. 1. Labor and capital have to be forcibly re-allocated to the production of what people really need, without eliminating private property and the incentives that make capitalism work. 2. Wages must go up. Way up. 3. Industries must be allowed to choose their own labor (no more HR). 4. Absolute protection for domestic production. Export, don't import. 5. Parasitic industries must be forcibly curtailed (usury, finance, insurance, civil lawsuits, gambling, etc.). 6. Women must be removed from the work force. (the NS never really struck at the root of feminism, but they treated the symptoms pretty successfully--productive work became high status for men, successful family formation became high status for women). 7. The currency must be decoupled from international markets in every way (no gold), and managed for the advantage of the domestic worker. Obviously this won't work in 21st-century US. At all. And if it did, the resulting powerful central state would inevitably be turned against us just like our last one was. Such is the plight of man. Something new may come along eventually though. The empire must finish dying before something else can be born. It's easy to say, of course, but we all still have to keep the lights on in the meantime.

@VaxxSabbath @petra @judgedread Nailed it. Non-technical people and technical people always have a hard time appreciating what the other group actually contributes. But it takes both. No moonshot without the reality denying dreamers. Also no moonshot without the slide rule guy, the analytical chemist, and the welder. And none of those guys (none) want to live on a ship. Those guys are the very definition of every part of normal human life the space believers want to leave behind in the mud. Going to church. Going to bars. Building model railroads. Fixing up old cars. Taking kitsch vacations. Wooing women. Raising children. Remodeling the kitchen. The fantastic can only exist on a vital substrate of the mundane. Period. Space dreamy utopia vision guys are necessary, but not sufficient. For anything.

@petra @VaxxSabbath @judgedread I'm not being combative, I swear, but there's another aspect to the point about how the space colony concept is internally inconsistent for to Reliance on the mud people. I'm not saying there's no way it will happen, but here's why I think the data we have indicates that it is highly unlikely:1. A break off space colony will require much higher technology than we currently have. 2. Almost (or possibly entirely) without exception, our experience shows that as technology levels up, the group of people required to produce/support/operate it becomes larger and more varied. 3. The vast majority of humans don't want to live on a ship4. Therefore, the closer our tech level approaches that needed to make the breakaway space colony possible, the more the chances of at least one indispensable person refusing to participate approach 100%. And that's simply because the number of people involved gets so huge.

@petra @s2208 @NoDoxGregBrady @slashdot @Paleface I started my "career" in a place full of very high percentile men. I didn't even have a concept of intelligence. Never thought about it once. When I left for a place with a more representative sample of the local population, I was amazed. Still amazed, honestly.

@James_Dixon @VaxxSabbath @BroDrillard @sickburnbro It's a concept closely related to our lord's functional definition of "neighbor" from the good Samaritan parable. Who is your neighbor? The one who acts neighborly to you. Also very closely related to "by their fruit ye shall know them." I still run across these kinds of epiphanies in scripture all the time: words I've heard a thousand times over decades but never really heard because they were shouted down by post-enlightenment be nice dogma within my own mind. I swear the twentieth century broke all our brains.

@judgedread @heytomjones It really does tickle the brain, doesn't it? There's something going on, for sure. Way too much evidence and testimony. Somebody or something is operating flying machines that demonstrate the current official physics model is wrong or incomplete. Has been for some time. Beyond that, though, who knows?

@EscapeVelo I built one like that years ago--before they were importing them from china. I hope that one works for you. I'll tell you what: that thing is the labor saver of labor savers. Gadget of the year ten years straight.

@jb @NoDoxGregBrady It's really misleading to say "the Anglican church." Better to say "the Anglican churches." What we call Anglican churches today are the children of the church of England spawned in every Anglo colony. Various Anglican churches are in and out of communion with each other, and are various levels of gay, with the Episcopalians probably taking the top spot, although CofE is a strong contender. Gafcon in Africa and the continuing churches in the US are not really gay at all, or at least, minimally gay.

@Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta @James_Dixon @NoDoxGregBrady @jb It's easy for you to say, as a Greek. God deals with individuals for sure, but also with peoples (or nations, whatever). You are the product of two thousand years of civilizational sanctification. The gospel books were literally written down, the very first time, in your vulgar tongue. The gospel is just now moving into sub-saharan Africa in comparison. God is hilarious and works on long timescales, He may produce an elevated, sanctified stove pipe black African Christian nation in another thousand years, to our amazement. We probably should expect them to act like monkeys (worst than monkeys?) for awhile yet.

@Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta @NoDoxGregBrady @James_Dixon @jb Well....the mechanics of the perception of the passage of time is one of the persistent mysteries of the human condition. Hence the phrase "as slow as Christmas."Maybe it should be "as slow as the civilization of the African"

@Kalogerosstilitis2RevengeoftheJunta @NoDoxGregBrady @James_Dixon @jb Race is real. There's no doubt about it. It's above our pay grade to make definitive statements on what God will and will not do with his creatures though. Especially over those kinds of timetables. If he can raise up children of Abraham from stones, he can certainly make something from Africans, if he chooses.
