@wjmaggos @saahbs That's the key issue, different communities prefer different things AND communities aren't homogeneous either. https://luis.apiolaza.net/2023/05/01/social-everything-buckets/

I don't understand the idea that the Fediverse HAS to grow to compete with service X or it will be irrelevant.Firstly a network has to be useful to its members, who do not necessarily want to be driving the news cycle. The need for continuous growth and influence comes from investors looking at making a profit, independently of how damaging the network becomes to members and overall society.

@strypey I think opposition to GM in New Zealand is a weird thing. "Deregulation" is a weird word, as in NZ we have a de facto ban.At least in trees, it has been very difficult to do anything after the destruction of trials some years ago.

@strypey @billbennett @isaacfreeman @SlaneCartoons @Powareverb I would set the donation limit to whatever nobody would sell a policy for. Say 1 grand or even less.

Someone somewhere was showing calculations for how many (few) years we would delay climate change via planting trees.Does anyone remember seeing that post and point me to it?

@va2lam @strypey From a meeting-our-2050-commitments point of view, I think the only trees that will help _on time_ will be fast growing plantations. On the other hand, that will only buy a little bit of time, because the heavy lifting will be done by the reduction of emissions.

US elections campaign flooding (again) the web with racism and xenophobia. This recipe is repeated everywhere because it is effective.

Listening: 'Wake up' by Rage Against the Machine. Recorded in 1992 telling stories from the 1960s, the whole vibe feels prescient. History does rhyme.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lzqUe1Qfec

I disagree with ‘tests of purity’ taken to the extreme. Of course a university will collaborate with a range of industries, usually with the aim of improving the way things are done. Universities support change in the world, sometimes incrementally, sometimes dramatically. https://mastodon.social/@Snoro/114735908318110144

@lightweight Hi Dave,What would be a good self-hosting solution (for multiple services), that would run on an old PC? Something like yunohost, but less flaky?
