Huh, how time flies. 6 or 7 years ago, at the OER Foundation, for whom I work as Open Source Technologist, we decided to replace our MailChimp with, eventually, a self-hosted instance of Mautic (https://mautic.org) to communicate with learners taking courses in our online open university courses (https://oeru.org)... We made the change when we had about 5k contact. We now have 66k. Wondering how much we're saving every year... 1/2

Turns out that for that many contacts, the annual cost of MailChimp is NZ$7920 (NZ$660/mo). We host our Mautic on a VPS with 15 other web services. It costs us about $30/mo. So, conservatively, let's say it's $3/mo or $36/year. Our Mautic instance has required negligible sysadmin time. The only other cost is $25ish/mo for a MailJet distributed SMTP solution for sending. So our annual cost has been ~ $336/year. That's 4% the cost of Mailchimp. A 96% savings. Seems compelling to me. 2/2

I should note, too, that Mautic is far more powerful in many ways than MailChimp, and is fully #libre. If you want see an earlier case study on our use of Mautic, see https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/5763/5600 and search for 'CastStudy' - it's a peer-reviewed journal paper we wrote a few years back.

@mackiwg and, incidentally, for about the same cost as what our single MailChimp account would currently cost us annually, we're making 54 separate web services - including all of the services for a full online university - available to our learners and our educator community, serving at least 100 million visitors/year. I think our approach is revolutionary in the midst of this 'cost of living' crisis most of us find ourselves in.

@lightweight Hi Dave,What would be a good self-hosting solution (for multiple services), that would run on an old PC? Something like yunohost, but less flaky?

@lightweight Any problems with deliverability with MailJet?

@foxylad nope. We have ~0.1% non-delivery rates, at worst...
