@w7voa The actionable question is why the US gave exclusive access to something valuable (the footage) to a single, selected corporation, without a fair and open bidding process. That should be illegal. It is clearly nepotism, favoritism and probably self-dealing. (Setting aside the knock on consequences). The alternative is to release it to the public.

@GraniteGeek @samlitzinger Call out to the fediverse…is there a web tech out there willing to help this local newspaper find the twitter plug-in and disable it? #volunteer #fediverse #birdsite

@dave NPR to reward Musk for doing nothing but the right thing…by promising to donate free content after he shapes up. Wouldn’t a defamation lawsuit be a better response, with sufficient penalties to discourage they bad behavior in the future?

@petergleick Deniers might go on and on against the science. But the mathematicians at the insurance company won’t be denied. Deniers aren’t going to start a competing insurance company, because the numbers don’t lie. The one wrench here will be politics where public funds are used to prop up the system. I don’t want my taxes paying so people can live in the wrong place and deny their risky behavior.

@stux Is there something we might read about “the proposal“? All I’ve seen is people getting heated. What does it even mean to “join”? They set up an instance; ok. But then what? Will they be cloning FB posts to it? Cloning fediverse posts to FB? Or is all that still within the paranoia cloud?

@stux Another (big) instance on AWS could be a few $100 a month. If folks are enjoying mastodon, think about sending a few buck to your instance’s admin. Think of this like that once-yearly reminder from Wikipedia: “free” is not free.

@georgetakei @zakalwe Real, technical atheism has a big hill to climb, because you’d have to prove there is no god anywhere, perhaps by going everywhere, which you can’t do. Proving a negative. It’s much easier to choose agnosticism which says: we can’t know for certain if there is a god or not. I’ve always thought that hard-core atheists were exercising a certain amount of belief (that there will never be proof, anywhere) in order to assert “no god”.

@rms The government could simply (zone) permit the offices to be used for residences (mixed use?), and I’d expect the building owners would make the investment to convert in order to get *some* rent, instead of none.

@rrb @dangillmor Randomly chosen, and therefore people of average means…would be *less prone to being corrupted? One might start out being not in someone’s pocket. But I imagine such a system would eventually be seen as actually winning a lottery (with a four year payout). To the detriment of all.

@stux It’s interesting to think about what other words/ideas are difficult to transmit down through time. Smells, sounds, sword-fighting techniques, dances, …

@stux In online games, we are sensitive to flash mobs overloading a given zone and slowing down a server. We build a fail safe that prevents more than a certain density of objects. (One way to do that is to teleport a random object out of the zone, when things get bad enough). I’d imagine there’s a central dispatcher that could tell the density exceeded a reasonable level and should have just started saying “do not enter”.
