@Teri_Kanefield @jacobrogers256 change in this country has ONLY come about because of "angry hotheads," though I think the term "hotheads" here is a bit loaded. Those two things you mentioned are great examples. The New Deal only happened because FDR had people (rightly) telling him that he would be facing violence if something wasn't done to help the working class. Running out of room here, but the Civil Rights mvmt also wasn't just ppl voting and asking nicely.

@aral So many parts of society prime people for this kind of black & white "good vs evil" thinking, and almost nothing is that simple. In so many cases, especially when it comes to people in power, there are no "good guys."

@Radical_EgoCom I see this as kind of an extension of the "paradox of tolerance" thing. I do understand why people have a knee-jerk reaction against it, but in cases like this it's really not so much limiting people's freedom as it is making sure that these kinds of people don't end up in a position of limiting people's freedom (or worse) themselves.

@Radical_EgoCom My knee-jerk reaction is to disagree, mainly because I don't see the police as actually maintaining order and safety... but I do also see the point of what you're saying.The problem as I see it is that people can't be trusted with power over others, but without power over others, police are basically just asking you to be nice... and if that worked, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

@cy I don't think the "harm reduction" thing has ever been true, but it's really been shown for the BS it is now that the Dems have just gone all-in on open support for genocide and a further-right border policy than even R's have tried in the past (for starters). Not that they haven't supported genocide before, this is just the most out in the open it's been.@majorlinux
