@CP93@mstdn.social film... I consider differently. I'm talking about heavily graded digital images.Like the show AP Bio: it looks ridiculous and although I liked the show itself, I couldn't watch it with that colour grade. And phoenix I like the contrasty look of, from what I've seen online of it.

snac gruvbox theme being worked on again.... still more to go, but I need a break and am happy to use it as-is until I get time to tweak again. I started from @grunfink@comam.es base snac css, to keep it nice and light. I noticed some other themes are quite heavy and wanted to keep it quick to refresh when liking or refreshing for whatever reason. So far so good. #snac #gruvbox #css #theme #smolweb

I went to Hawaii and thought a few of the things to see were a bit average... and it did make me realise I am extremely spoiled by our landscape at home in New Zealand. The mountain I have my home under is apparently very similar to Mt Fuji too.

Love that #snac notifies for things like blocks and unfollows. Especially if someone just followed me, I check their profile and seems decent, so I follow them back... and then a short while later they unfollow - and in the mean time I hadn't even posted as I'd been offline.Nope, I'm not playing those "building your followers" games: Unfollowed right back.

I guess I'm an outlier.I'm an auto-sparky by trade, fix heavy equipment for a job, and self host a bunch of stuff on a mates rack in a datacentre and at home, and have too many domains.I think the fact that people think this is too hard and they should just use fb pages or groups for everything says to me that we've failed in a large way.Doing home jobs for my trade has always been a thing though too. I've very DIY in that "if someone else can do it then I should be able to also - we're all just people."CC: @gyptazy@gyptazy.com

The hardest part of setting up tech stuff is that you don't know what you don't know, and it's not a visual thing laid out in front of you that you can just looks at and work out a likely process. So many times I have been stuck on something and will find a guide buried in a search engine that actually has the one step that every guide found prior has just glossed over as supposed common knowledge.I agree wordpress is terrible. I hate it. I tried it for a while and went back to Hugo, though now use writefreely.... but turned off federation because I don't care. I should probably have stuck with Hugo (which I still use for my photography site) but that has it's own barriers and hiccups to work out as you go.Basically you need to be stubborn until you find the info you need, there is no other way."Other people can do this, so I must be able to as well." and then proceed to lose a month of my life learning about this thing that other have picked up over time at their job but which I am trying to blind speedrun learning enough to do a certain thing. Stubbornness and ignorance will get you long way. Look at Elon Musk.

TLDR: I will never again use XYZ owned domainsWhat a fucking debacle. I purchased a cheap .quest domain to run my xmpp server on for my family and a few close friends. It was on sale, was cheap and I grabbed it.It lasted less than 24 hours before being suspended by the regsistrar.Turns out, it ended up on a spamhaus list, and XYZ suspends domains automatically based on that. I have lodged tickets with each, but can't rectify because:- Spamhaus issues can't be rectified because the domain is locked- XYZ won't unsuspend because it is still on the Spamhaus blocklistChicken and egg. I have tickets with each, and with Porkbun which is where I started.I get it. It's a fucking great scam to bleed money from spammers when they snap up cheap domains.I just wanted one to self-host xmpp for my family though, and am now caught up in the loop sadly. So now I will never use XYZ owned domains (there are a lot, and some fun ones sadly).Spamhaus in itself isn't a bad thing; it is a great tool. But automatically flagging everything listed by it in your registrar? Yeah nah fuck that. Using centralised blocklists where everything is automatically opted in with no recourse are a terrible idea. That goes for domains, fedi, whatever. There is always collateral damage and it sours it for everyone. It is just a stupid.#spamhaus #domains #domain #DNS #XYZ #spam #blocklist

Finally have my Prosody server all compliant!I had an epiphany last night about something in the nginx config and after sorting that, all the optional XEP listed also pass! Now to convince wife and kids to use it for our group chat... they really don't want to install any more apps, because I'm "being difficult" because they already use whatsapp 😑The main reason I'm impressed with it over matrix, is reliable notifications. It just works. So far, anyway.Thank you to the people that replied to my post last week suggesting I try xmpp after the matrix server we used shut down. I had written it off as an old platform for nerds, but it's... actually really good ❤️#prosody #xmpp #chat #nginx #matrix

Yes. To get a car to the standard to win, it takes specialist skills and experience. Like most things, money eventually wins. But they will never understand the satisfaction of having done it themselves.Source: I built cars for people.

yup. The downsides of Linux are, at most, equivalent to the downsides of using windows (as far as annoyance factor) and after using Linux for even a few weeks, well, going back to windows is.... horrible.Anyone that isn't forced to use Microsoft products should not be using Windows; It's just a better experience to not.

I agree, it's not shit. But it certainly does have its pain points, like any OS; my argument is that Linux isn't any more painful now, when taking the presumption that you aren't necessarily reliant on certain softwares that don't have alternatives or can't run under WINE/VM. I indeed duel boot just to use Capture One - an old version to go with my older camera that doesn't require a subscription and I don't let update. But as Dave replied; the issue isn't just usability - I can get windows to a somewhat acceptable level to use by changing things - the issue is of owning your data and keeping it accessible to your future self. You can thank Gabe Newell for indirectly helping to ensure you aren't paying for Windows monthly and purchasing locked down programs from an app store. It will get there still, it is inevitable, but I will not pay monthly for an operating system.I also have an ISO asved which might be the last version to allow local accounts; I should not need an online Microsoft account to log into my local machine. THAT is the sort of rubbish that everyone hates.CC: @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz

you have to be a MASSIVE douchebag to get defederated or banned on here, and those instances are well on the fringes. Not true. Fosstodon sorted their shit, and after people knew it was sorted, other instance admins STILL blocked them. That all seems quite childish to me (the Moderator in question left of their own accord, which tells me they are far more adult about the incident than anyone else). So no, you don't have to be a massive douche, you just need to not go along with the narrative the other large instance admins push. It's been like this for half a decade; it's extremely immature and I'm sick of feeling like one of the only adults in a room overrun by screaming toddlers.CC: @gyptazy@gyptazy.com @stux@mstdn.social
