Reading in the local Auto Club magazine about someone here in town who paid for professional restoration of their vehicle (apparently did not restore it themself), and has entered it in car shows, where it has won an award. 🤔 (is this common? i.e. pay someone else to do all the work and get all the credit?)

@ai6yr In the ancient Olympics; chariot races were awarded to the sponsor of the team and not to the charioteer.

@ai6yr I learned this from @FlintDibble ; who related the story of Cynisca, a Spartan noble who trained the chariot team her family sponsored at the games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynisca

@ai6yr a lot of the whole “beautiful thing” culture is centered around who has the deed to the beautiful thing, and not who made the thing beautiful. If the rich person with the deed to the thing hired the finest artisans to make the thing a beautiful thing, this is considered a triumph of the person with the deed.My father and I do all the work on our boat, whose motto is: we win beauty pageants, not races.

Do they do this for marathons, too? Anyone want to run a few marathons and put my name on your bib? 🤪

Yes. To get a car to the standard to win, it takes specialist skills and experience. Like most things, money eventually wins. But they will never understand the satisfaction of having done it themselves.Source: I built cars for people.
