@hund I mooted this with the KDE developers many years ago.IIRC, my question to them was "Isn't it a bad idea to base your desktop on a technology owned by a commercial entity?".The response was "Not really, if it becomes an issue we'll just fork it!".Oh well, it looks like that time has come. I do hope lessons are learned from this.

@metalune Also there's appropriateness of use.I was surprised, in looking at polkit (most GNU/Linux distributions use it as an authorisation service) uses a Javascript interpreter for its configuration. Why on earth do you need an active configuration format?

Nice to know that in these difficult times our broadband provider, Virgin Media, is increasing our package price by £4 a month.I understand the need for occasional price increases as a result of additional features but when these come, in what is a time of hardship for some, it's a bitter pill.Moreso when you're the loyal customer of 20+ years and frequent switchers take advantage of better than 50% price reductions for a six month period.Shameful really. 😔

@wizzwizz4 I'll take a look but the advantage of unlimited broadband, with a gaming-happy son, is a major consideration. Our recent usage figures were 352GB (one month) and 51 PetaBytes (last 12 months) - I can't even visualise that last one. We're currently on a 200Mbps tier and I really look forward to him going to Uni to acquire a sense of reality on data usage/cost. 😀

@kev You're not alone in having a scrollable menu, I've seen it with many sites on mobile. You can mitigate it through careful choices in the ordering of the menu items. You could put cookies and GDPR-compliance policy links last. 😉

@wizzwizz4 Sounds like you're heading in the same direction regarding media reputation as we are in the UK.Our newspapers are in a dire state and TV news outlets are becoming more biased and selective in what they report.Hence the rise of the small YouTube news channels which are gaining traction.

@nebunez Don't do that, anything can be made to work. What's your latest issue?I've been running ejabberd for many years and am now switching to prosody. I might be able to help you.

@nebunez Have you looked outside your prosody configuration to determine if the required ports are open?I don't see anything in what you've shown there that would break things.

@nebunez Unless you're going to restrict your chat server to conversejs and https connections you might also want to open the regular client connection port on 5222 (this does plain and TLS connections).

@edgren Were you concerned about allergies? We're preferring the AstraZeneca vaccine over the Pfizer one for people affected by allergies. You shouldn't have fears about taking the vaccine. Our experience, in the UK, is wholly positive and we have the numbers to support that.

@pleiades I've been running a personal ejabberd server for years and only recently put it under some load.I have a, modest, dual-core server (AMD E350 1.6GHz) and my single chat room with 12 participants saw the ejabberd process using 115% of CPU (out of 200%) and a virtual size over 1GB for RAM.I'm currently building a replacement and using Prosody which, I hope, will be much lighter in weight.

Sad to learn that our recent National Hero - Captain Tom Moore - has succumbed to Covid-19.For those that don't know, this 100 year old man raised over £33 million for our National Health Service (NHS) by walking around his garden many, many times.R.I.P. Captain (Sir) Tom. You will be missed by your countrymen. 🇬🇧

@kiri Not federation. A chat isn't visible across all servers.Your JID contains the domain of the server which hosts you. The domain in the JID of the target recipient provides the server-to-server routing information.@fleegman

@hund It seems, that the definition of federated has changed from my perception. It states that two entities being able to communicate is federation. So in that case, two people with tin cans and connecting string are federated.@kiri @fleegman

@hund Yes, you're right but doesn't that put us in the realm of just labelling things for the sake of having a label.Obviously, it's beneficial for alike systems to be able to communicate and a bonus when dissimilar ones can also do it.But there could come a time when such labels are used to discriminate and individuals might be treated differently for not being on a federated platform - for the sake of a label.@kiri @fleegman
