#xmpp vs #matrix, what's your take for a self-hosted solution to text-chat between friends? I've been using #matrix and so far so good, although with a recent server migration, I might as well ditch it for #xmpp if there are significant advantages over #matrix (#xmpp less resource demanding perhaps?).

@pleiades I'd say from what I've read at least that xmpp uses less resources, and is a bit more reliable than matrix, but that's without really having used them myself, I think @hund knows xmpp pretty well, and can answer better than me :)

@pleiades It depends on the usage. If you don't want to make a public server (with open registration) and don't want to connect huge rooms on a slow server, then I think the #matrix synapse is very good choice. (fancy clients, real slack alternative)If you want a scalable, very stable and secure chat server, then choose prosody #xmpp.

@pleiades I humbly suggest you take a look at what some of us are building at @snikket_im - open-source personal messaging (think WhatsApp/Signal/Telegram alternative) based on #XMPP.The project is still growing (see https://snikket.org/about/goals/ ) but there are some significant updates planned this week, so if you're up for a project at the weekend... 🙂

@pleiades I've been running a personal ejabberd server for years and only recently put it under some load.I have a, modest, dual-core server (AMD E350 1.6GHz) and my single chat room with 12 participants saw the ejabberd process using 115% of CPU (out of 200%) and a virtual size over 1GB for RAM.I'm currently building a replacement and using Prosody which, I hope, will be much lighter in weight.

@pleiades XMPP is a lot more lightweight than Matrix. My Prosody-server with about 17-20 users uses less than 50 MB on disk and currently about 35 MB of RAM.We have a public chat that's bridged to both an IRC- and a Matrix-channel, so there's a lot of activity there as well. It's also dead simple to setup. It's basically installing Prosody via the repos, importing the cert(s) using a command and then starting the server. :)

@hund @neildarlow @mattj @takoma @sotolf Thank you for all the answers! I'll give #xmpp a try and compare it to #matrix to see which one I enjoy the most. snikket also looks really interesting! Thank you again, such a wonderful community. 💫
