OK, so do two people have to be on the same XMPP server in order to communicate? Or does the protocol have some kind of forwarding, like email does?

@fleegman XMPP has federation, I use it to talk to some friends on other servers :)

@kiri Not federation. A chat isn't visible across all servers.Your JID contains the domain of the server which hosts you. The domain in the JID of the target recipient provides the server-to-server routing information.@fleegman

@kiri So all you need is their address, like jrandomhacker@yax.im, and it Just Works?

@hund It seems, that the definition of federated has changed from my perception. It states that two entities being able to communicate is federation. So in that case, two people with tin cans and connecting string are federated.@kiri @fleegman

@neildarlow @kiri @fleegman I'm pretty sure there's some very old and in-depth definition of it in some old and fancy book, but when it comes to software, it simply means that two servers can talk to each other. Let's say two different XMPP- or email-servers like Gmail and Mailbox.org :)

@hund Yes, you're right but doesn't that put us in the realm of just labelling things for the sake of having a label.Obviously, it's beneficial for alike systems to be able to communicate and a bonus when dissimilar ones can also do it.But there could come a time when such labels are used to discriminate and individuals might be treated differently for not being on a federated platform - for the sake of a label.@kiri @fleegman

@neildarlow @kiri @fleegman I don't agree. Federation describes an important part of how it works. :)And while federation is a good thing, it doesn't have to make sense for everything or everyone.
