I don't have a Goodreads account. Instead, I have a small web page where I track every book I've read since 2018, in HTML and CSS. https://www.ndhfilms.com/mybooksThe most recent book is Ghost Story by Peter Straub. This is a top-ten book for me. The opening section is a white-knuckle reading experience, and it goes hard until the very end. Something I enjoyed about Ghost Story is that many of the characters are older, in their 60s and 70s. This made for a nice change of pace.

I was wondering how the *hell* Ghost Story didn't win the Bram Stoker Award for best horror novel. Simple answer: the award didn't exist yet (not until 1987). Peter Straub would go on to win for Best Novel, and was nominated quite often.

I would like to get some PHP sign-up forms on my website. One would be for people to sign up with emails on the main page of my site, and one would be for name, email, and mailing address for my upcoming First-Class Fiction project. If you are familiar with PHP, I would like to pay you to make these sign-up forms. My budget is $65. You may contact me by email at njb@nantucketlit.com.

I received a lot of help from the /r/libreboot community on Reddit. It has been shut down for quite a while now. I have tried the #Libreboot community on Lemmy, but I don't get too many responses there. Any recommendations on places to talk about Libreboot and give/receive help?

I my expectation was that access logs in Apache would "break off" every day or so into smaller files. My logs have stopped doing that. All entries keep accumulating in the main access.log file, which is now dozens of megabytes in size. What causes this? Is there any way to get it back to one access log per day?

I still think Babylon 5 has one of the best villains in any TV show, in Alfred Bester. He's played by Walter Koenig from Star Trek, a wonderful against-type performance. What's so great about Bester is that he seems aware that other people see him as a villain, and he's willing to play the part. It's like he's thinking "I know you all despise me, and you know what? I don't really care." He's arrogant, but he has the intelligence and skill to back it up, which is a scary combination.

Something I did not expect: my HTML ebooks, and the site in general, look pretty darn good on my flip phone's browser. I think there's some potential to make it really solid. Even the dark mode worked well, which was a sight to see. It felt really good to see this. I'd read a blog post somewhere that you want your website to be functional on a crummy PSP browser. Seeing everything work on a flip phone made me feel like I'm the right track for #accessibility.

Okay, I know a 2018 Microsoft Surface Book 2 isn't the latest-and-greatest, but Steam games shouldn't be running as slow as tar.Let me update and restart a few times. Now it's running smoother. Oh, and my Windows 10 copy has Copilot now. This is one of those quality-of-life things. I know there's a way to disable Copilot, but still...

Security question for Barnes & Noble: who is your favorite author?I think I'll skip that one, since I talk about them publicly now and then.

Really, all these security questions are sort of useless. Any clever person could figure them out.

I use client-side JavaScript in my HTML ebooks. It's all free software, compatible with the GNU LibreJS extension. This allows for my interactive features like dark mode, bookmarking and the audiobook player. *BUT*. You'll still get a great ebook with JS turned off. The Dark Mode is built into the CSS, so it can respond to browser settings, and a <noscript> tag contains a list of all the audiobook files.

Do you own an older e-reader, like the Sony PSR-300 or PSR-500? If so, I am curious to know if you have any EPUB files on it that display with justified paragraphs.

For any #GeminiProtocol and #Gopher masters out there: is there a good way to specify bold or italicized text? Is *bold* and _italic_ the way to go?

#Monsterdon #DeathRace2000 is one of a very few movies to get a zero-star rating from Roger Ebert. Ebert reserved zero stars for movies he felt were not only bad, but distinctly immoral. https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/death-race-2000

What "slop" means to me. A friend of mine shared something personal online. I won't use their name until I get their permission. They have a family member going through a mental health crisis. This crisis has been made much worse by AI. AI validates people's delusions and makes it harder to get help. When I think of "slop", it's not a mere annoyance. "Slop" is something that has caused a tangible harm in the life of someone I care about. My opinion of AI folly couldn't be any lower.

One of the more unique sights in Colorado is Medano Creek in Great Sand Dunes National Park. Because the creek bed is pure sand, the bed is constantly being built up and eroded, which forms waves in the creek. The Great Sand Dunes have some of the clearest night skies in America. I have never seen the Milky Way shine like it did at the dunes. Worth a visit! https://www.nps.gov/grsa/planyourvisit/medano-creek.htm

I finally got my Macintosh Plus working. I bought a Floppy Emu to replace the failed Mac Plus floppy drive. I have no idea how I'm going to get any documents I write off this thing, but I'm glad to have a Macintosh to play with.
