For any #GeminiProtocol and #Gopher masters out there: is there a good way to specify bold or italicized text? Is *bold* and _italic_ the way to go?

@nantucketlit wow. TIL Gemini GMI formatted text is so minimal that it doesn't have a specification for inline emphasis.I thought it had at least that much.

@krozruch @nantucketlit as an outside observer (non-user) I partially agree but I'd call it "out of scope" and not a bug.IMO the Gemini text format is insufficient for storytelling if it doesn't have inline emphasis.

@krozruch @nantucketlit Still, you could use Gemini as a database front-end to browse and discover documents in formats better suited for the content: CommonMark, basic HTML, etc.

@progo @krozruch @nantucketlit Gemini doesn't use things like bold or italics and no inline shenanigans for a reason. Think about it this way: the text should render fine on any simple old terminal (or dot matrix printer) that does not support bold or italic characters.https://geminiprotocol.net/docs/gemtext.gmi

@lasse @krozruch @nantucketlit Personally I acknowledge and accept that as "out of scope". The "what about a simple dumb terminal or printer" idea makes sense.I don't like it as a medium for articles. And that's arguably a personal preference.People should use what they like and what works for them.
