"My claim is that we can learn surprisingly little about philosophical problems by studying the works of the ‘great’ historical philosophers. Becoming acquainted with the history of philosophy contributes very little to improving our under-standing of those problems and their potential solutions, so we would be better off doing much less of it"👑https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/0020174X.2022.2124542

The Californian Ideology is serviceable as a critique of the tech industry, but I find it far more useful in what it *doesn't* say – it doesn't grapple with the defeat of the left (in the US and worldwide) or the lack of any real alternative with the passing of social democracy and Marxist state socialismMark Drey's contemporary response to the essay gets at thishttps://www.nettime.org/Lists-Archives/nettime-l-9802/msg00020.html

i had genuine respect for colin drumm as an independent scholar trying to work outside the academy until he started going eco-authoritarian this year and it genuinely makes me upset b/c the dude is smart + passionateanyway this line of thinking is fractally wrong. from the success of ostromite commons, to aspirations of freedom emerging in basically every culture, to countless examples of environmentally destructive tech being promoted b/c it serves power

also LMFAO at treating any sort of philosophy, but particularly *political philosophy* as being isolated to a bunch of big names talking it out. bottom-up aspirations and informal discussion have played an immense role in shaping ideas, to say nothing of cross-cultural dialogue. genuinely frustrating that someone who claimed to reject the academy kept its emphasis on treating figures in isolation

maybe i missed it, but how is it that I've never come across critiques of rationalists for not mentioning doing more exercise as low hanging fruit to improve cognitive ability?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise#Neurobiological

leftists using insights from continental philosophy to engage in basic marketing practices for their podcast is as cringe as business majors citing the Art of War or Meditations to justify business decisions

games workshop has no incentive to ever change 40ks lore to not be ontologically fascist, but one way to make it less chud friendly would be to make a post gender / sexuality world"oh you're nonbinary and got black market gender affirming surgery but can you hold a lasgun and fight for the emperor? we're good"

i think that as a replacement for markets library socialism is woefully inadequate, but one thing i will give its advocates is that it is a concrete proposal that you can model and test out in the here and nowIMO one of the worst legacies of the dominance marxism is the tendency to treat a world beyond capitalism as being a singularity, so radically different we cannot speak of it

this is bad for the obvious reason that if change *does* happen you are disorientated and have to build something on the fly – this was a serious problem for both bolsheviks and social democrats who got "power" and then didn't know what socialism would consist of so they defaulted to embracing capitalist practices – but also because the act of overcoming capitalism is going to require economic coordination

even something as a simple as a community center or a protest requires people to solve coordination problems and move resources around. being able to do that more effectively Is Good because for the foreseeable future we're the underdogs and so if we have any chance of winning we have to do more with less
