@paul how do you use touchpads musically? I guess they're pretty much xy pads,.. hmmm...i tend to use touchpads because i'm usually on laptops but i find that it's way easier to aggravate my carpal tunnel with touchpads (and phones) vs mice (but then scroll wheels tend to aggravate my carpal tunnel too). i kinda wonder how i'd fare with thinkpad-style dots but i'm assuming not well either...

@paul I went through school as a percussionist and orchestras weren't really my thing and with all that organization/money/infrastructure needed to run them they're bound to not be the most progressive institutions but also hey I guess if you can find that sort of comparative career stability in music good for you but also being out of school I feel kinda distant more than ever from the whole classical sorta game even the "new music" scene I was in but who knows mb it will suck me back in someday somehow

@paul i think it's a consequence of what it means to study music, which is focuses on the western art music classical canon and there's this culture and sort of player that has developed around that where,... i've gone through school with people who don't really do anything 'outside of the page' (improvise/compose) and also a huge overlap of people who just don't really listen to anything outside of classical and don't even touch "new music"... and i mean they're great at what they do, but it's like this self-reinforcing culture where the idea of music is hyperfocused and people who go through school get orchestra job or teaching job and perpetuate this, and with how huge the orchestra is in terms of size and visibility, the orchestra can't help but be the public face of classical music that everybody knows about... the further away i am from going to school the more i think getting percussion degrees just wasn't the right path for me,... i think the situation might be getting better? and there are ppl who are able to look beyond this focus but institutional change is slow...i've def witnessed those concerts with this weird mashup of like.. pop persona but classical musician? and i mean, i love pop things, i tend to write pretty poppy in my own way with my live coding,... but the mashup doesn't really work imho

been looking at speech synthesis again and came across this which seems preeeeeeeeetty darn comprehensive: https://www.charlesames.net/sound/speech-synthesis.html . previously only futzed around with vowel formants in pure data and was looking into how to model consonants but it looks like there many more worms in the can i have opened 😩 😩 😩 (on a sidenote, do worms really come in cans and is the worm-in-can packaging method problematic?)

@entreprecariat i live-coded for a conference held in berlin summer 2020 which normally cost a pretty penny but being a participant, got access to their online conference platform for free 👍 but also as i'm in california and everything was sync in berlin so i pretty much missed everything sync and only could catch the youtube archival vids which were available to even non-paying people anyways (which i mean, i'm down for) but it kinda makes me wonder what (online) conference will look like and what their funding models will be and i mean, things going online = accessibility bc i'm in not-big-city california and traveling and housing is a thing so i hope things stay online (but also hope i get out of here) but there's also something irreplaceable about physical experience (and conferences) too

@paul i went vim -> emacs -> vim. the defaults are just much better for my carpal tunnel hands (but i added the ctrl+a and ctrl+e from emacs for insert mode)

@entreprecariat ahhh, this is a lot of interesting things to think about. definitely the ability to repair is akin to a sort of power and "ownership" and it has been a huge issue for awhile, particularly with companies cracking down on people showing how to repair their tractors and what not. But also accessibility doesn't really mean anybody can do it and there is always a level of opaqueness somewhere, I mean obviously the architecture of an i9 chip is a greater deal of opaqueness and requires more up-front of the user to be able to understand, but arguably perhaps in some circumstances not as needed and being able to change out a fan. But there's different levels of opaqueness and maybe not everybody needs to know how to even change out a fan in your computer, as it requires some standard of dexterity and tools and not everybody has to availability to invest in that, so obviously it's bad if the balance of power solely resides in large corporations, but there's always going to be some sort of power imbalance. i don't know half of what's going on in my car and don't particularly want to know, yes it would be helpful, but there's other things more interesting and more pressing to me to know.

@entreprecariat notions of subservience and relying on a certain technology is interesting too, as that also has power dynamics at play. I suppose ideally we wouldn't want to be dependent on large power-hoarding entities to live, but I mean, at least some technologies are meant for us not to have to do everything and inevitability we rely on these services provided but then are able to focus on other things and i'm not quite sure where line between relying on something and subservience exists.
