Sick me: 'I'm not doing any work today.' *Does work until midnight*Still sick me: 'I'll sleep in until noon and do nothing all day.' *Wakes up at 7am and attempts to do researchy things*I'm really bad at this credible commitment thing right now.

If this isn't a textbook example of how to not run a survey, it's pretty freakin' close.https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jul/19/women-more-likely-than-men-view-boris-johnson-as-dishonest-guardian-quiz-sample

@eleanorkonik My students always look astonished when I tell them to look at Wikipedia first for certain things (like a readable introduction to a specific econometric method). And yet they have no problem citing textbooks or handbooks instead of underlying sources, even when I specifically tell them to only reference the sources.

Writing about problems in country-level foreign direct investment data and... I don't even know why we bother analyzing that shit. :BlobCatGooglyShrug:

@bookandswordblog Interesting thing is that I've got four papers on FDI data issues: one from international business, two from international political economy, and one from international economics. The last one doesn't actually talk about data problems, just about how micro and macro approaches complement each other. :blobwhee: :BlobCatGooglyShrug:

@bookandswordblog Thanks for the recommendation - very interesting. Reminds me a bit of a dataset in economics on per capita income going back a couple thousand years that went through some significant revision a few years ago because of source issues...

@troubleMoney @penguin42 I'm guessing he's saving it for next year, but don't expect it to fit under a typical dress-shirt sleeve!

Diana Laurillard, professor of learning with digital technologies at University College London’s Institute of Education, said the shift to online learning required a complete overhaul of traditional higher education. One-hour lectures and workshops would need to be broken up into smaller 10-20 minute webinars, interspersed with practical exercises, question-and-answer sessions and discussion groups.https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/apr/25/degrees-of-separation-can-universities-adapt-in-the-rush-to-online-learning

Our senior admin have been sending out daily email updates. These are a bit more entertaining, but a lot of the content is quite similar. I suspect this is common across the sector.https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/a-note-from-your-university-about-its-plans-for-next-semesterhttps://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/an-update-from-your-universitys-vice-president-of-academic-affairs

Any recommendations for music notation software? MuseScore is too finicky/unstable at the moment, and Finale's prices are even higher than what I remembered. Sibelius seems okay, but I'm not a fan of the subscription model. Am I missing any other options for Windows?

I switched my office hours to Zoom this term on the department's recommendation after we dropped the MS Bookings/Teams configuration. I set up the waiting room in Zoom.Today was the first day I had multiple appointments and no one ended up in the waiting room. After my meetings, I checked the meetings settings - waiting room enabled. I then had to google around and find the option in the browser interface because Zoom is too lazy/dumb to just put everything in their app. 1/2

Based on NHS England data, roughly 1/3 of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 last year were readmitted with multiorgan dysfunction rates higher than expected in the general population.I wonder if this will turn out to be purely a severe covid effect, or if expected risks across the general population will rise due to consequences of mild and moderate cases.https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n693

The Intercept managed to get (and publish) training documents for the NYPD's goon squad (SRG). There seem to be similarities in terms of officer recruitment to what we see in secret police forces in autocracies (second link, Sharpf's research also looks at other cases like the Stasi), with underachievers/violent individuals selecting into SRG duty for reasons of career advancement.I think there's even enough public data to test this.https://theintercept.com/2021/04/07/nypd-strategic-response-unit-george-floyd-protests/https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ajps.12475

So the French dude who did that sham hydroxychloroquine study also appears to be a bad guy, in addition to kinda sucking at science.I wonder if he also threatens journals, editors, and reviewers with lawsuits when his submissions are rejected.https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/may/22/world-expert-in-scientific-misconduct-faces-legal-action-for-challenging-integrity-of-hydroxychloroquine-study

Can anyone recommend anthropological or historical research on trade between kingdoms/states/cities/etc. in the Americas or Africa prior to European contact/invasion?

@fribbledom I had something similar happen to me. I played a lot as a kid, studied chess books, won a couple of small tournaments, and suddenly couldn't stand looking at the board. It was years before I even sat down to play a casual game after that.

Re-#introduction time!I'm Michael, an academic at a large UK research university. Most of my research and teaching focus on the intersections of business, economics, finance, and political science/international relations. I like applied econometrics or data science, or whatever dumb name it's calling itself this week.I toot about lots of other things too; I have very wide-ranging interests.
