It's pleasant to see Pres. Trump and his base bicker over the Epstein files, but it raises a question: Why didn't the Ds attack Mr. Trump more with the Epstein story when he was running for office? It would have been much more effective with his supporters than claims of fascism. He can't deny his connection, https://www.threads.com/@newrepublic/post/DMYJm9QxWSH#JeffreyEpstein#uspol

@wjmaggos Maybe it's true for science that good ideas spread and bad ones are forgotten, but I'm not sure that it's generally true. For instance, whatever side one falls on about religion, it's not the case that any of Protestantism/Catholicism/Islam/atheism is going away.

@wjmaggos It's rarely worth arguing online with someone who disagrees with you -- how many times have you changed your mind about something because of some online stranger arguing with you?If it's someone who follows you, or who has interacted positively with you in the past, then disagreement might lead to a constructive discussion.

@wjmaggos I'd like "liberal" to mean someone who is particularly concerned with freedom, social, political and economic. But unfortunately in English words change meaning according to their usage.

@keithzg Could be.It's objectively strange that we got a PM who had never won an election in his life before becoming our top political leader. That's not promising for strengthening MPs or Cabinet.#CanPol #cdnpoli

@Yuki If the courts regularly ruled that the Charter had anti-liberal implications — e..g, private health care must be allowed to ensure "security of the person" — we'd find that Liberal and NDP governments would be more open to using the #NotwithstandingClause as well.In answer to an earlier post, my understanding is that S. 33 was added because the ROC premiers wanted to maintain the principle of parliamentary supremacy; I don't think René Lévesque wanted it.@VE2UWY @EdwinG @Canadian_Eh

@wjmaggos I suppose some of the people suspended from Bluesky will be coming here -- I think I saw one new account like that. Do you have any feel for whether people are leaving Bluesky over this issue?

@wjmaggos Bluesky gets the attention but when you look at MAUs, Threads is the main competitor to Twitter, and they're becoming progressively more compatible with the Fediverse.Don't count out Loops either, especially since the future of TikTok is in doubt.

@overholt There's plenty that can be said about books that have been banned that most people think ought to be available -- it seems crazy to ban *The Handmaid's Tale*. Do you also discuss the banning of books that are generally considered repugnant, like *The Turner Diaries*?

@overholt I remember *The Anarchist Cookbook* from when I was a teen -- I'm glad I didn't make napalm and burn the house down. Dangerous. So you don't have any examples of hate speech among your banned books?

@wjmaggos But there's the famous Adam Smith quote about "People of the same trade..." Conservatives are right in general to laud capitalism, but they shouldn't be naive about capitalists. As for the line about antisemitism being the socialism of fools, I think that reveals something important about socialism: often it's driven more by resentment and envy than a genuine desire to help the worse off.

@wjmaggos I think you were interesting by the essays of #JosephHeath I've linked to in the past. He co-authored *The Rebel Sell*, which was in part a response to *No Logo*: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rebel_Sell(I confess that I have read neither book as yet.)

@wjmaggos "Western Civilisation" refers to the cultures that are the descendants of Athens + Rome + Jerusalem. The borders of Western Civilisation are blurry, but it's still a meaningful concept.
