So... I think my biggest complaint about mastodon so far is the stark difference between the mobile app and the web views. I feel like I can do/see different things between them and that's kind of frustrating. I wonder if there's a plan to streamline them? #mastodon

@adam I mean, I think being able to see favourites, different feeds, pin posts, and view alt text is a fair thing to want. And right now I can't do these in the app. I don't think it's a feature to have web and app be so different, it's kind of a pain tbh. But that said, I've been looking for an alternative to twitter for a long time and I'm glad I've discovered mastodon from the chaos of its fall because I still enjoy the app without those things. Just hope they get added sometime.

@adam it sounds like I do! A few people have suggested this now! I just want to get familiar with the territory a little before I make the move over. Jumping from interface to interface is a bit rough for me. So I'm gonna figure out language and peeps before I make the switch 😁

@adam yeah, there are issues I have with the idea, but I also see the benefits!

So many on mastodon seem #AltText savvy which warms my heart! I have another #a11y tip for your toots: avoid emojis or using asterisks to censor/replace words. Screen readers read out the emoji and it may not be clear what word is being replaced. Asterisks are the same (it will read like gibberish). Also, those of us with #CognitiveDisabilities have a really rough time trying to figure out what you mean. Use the content warnings instead 🙂

@adam yeah, I've never been a big fan of replacing words or whole sentences with emojis. I typically just tack an emoji on as an enhancer

@stux you're doing great! We appreciate you 🙏 (also, FWIW, I haven't encountered any issues in my time here besides maybe 2 timeouts that just required 1 reload.)

Some #AltText tips for your day: avoid flowery language. While a beautiful, flowing, description is nice, alt text should be as succinct as possible. Too much embellishment can be confusing and actually dilute the description. It may be frustrating to sit through a long paragraph of text. Focus on the main points of the image and be sure you're not detailing things that don't add to the experience of the image. Avoid verbs ending in 'ing' and stick to active voice if you can. Happy AltTexting!

To my sighted peeps trying to empathize more with blind and low vision peeps: ever been in a car while using hands free and you get a text with emojis or an image? Remember hearing that long string of emojis (and that one old emoticon) as "heart emoji sunrise emoji colon parentheses umbrella emoji image"? ...imagine hearing that every day online. Multiple times. This is why good #AltText is important 🤣

I've seen platforms that implement #a11y slightly better. I have never seen a platform so vocal and inviting of accessible best practices. #AltText #CamelCase hashtags, #ContentWarnings #captions and #subtitles, #transcripts and so much more. Mastodon actually gives a shit about being #inclusive and this is exactly the kind of mindset the entirety of the internet needs. Being a professional in the field of #a11y this is what I work for and hope for!

#Transcripts are one of the only ways #Deafblind people can access some web content. Don't exclude our Deafblind friends. Remember how important transcripts are. #a11y

Stop hiding alt text! Alternative text isn't only for blind people and even if it were, it doesn't need to be hidden! #AltText helps people with low vision, reading disabilities, distraction or focus issues, comprehension barriers, people working through brain fog, and so many others. Don't hide your alt text. It's not a dirty secret feature. It's wildly helpful to many. #Accessibility should not be a secret. It's not ugly.

@untsuki in the case of actionable images, this is great practice but be careful about using alt text for things other than a description or description of the image purpose (if it has one) things not pertaining to the co text of the description or action of the image will be confusing to those who expect alt text to work in its intended way.

@untsuki which is why it's so important for this and many other sites, apps, services to highlight their accessibility features and outline why they're there. More education and knowledge is required for those who haven't had the exposure.

"Cis is a slur", "I don't use pronouns and you can't make me!" I'm starting to think bigots just... don't understand how grammar works. They'll argue about "they" usage until they collapse, but they can't figure out pronouns and adjectives...

If you're using hashtags with more than one word, use #PascalCase to make them more easily readable for people and assistive technologies. It could be the difference between #analbumcover and #AnAlbumCover 😏
