Stop hiding alt text! Alternative text isn't only for blind people and even if it were, it doesn't need to be hidden! #AltText helps people with low vision, reading disabilities, distraction or focus issues, comprehension barriers, people working through brain fog, and so many others. Don't hide your alt text. It's not a dirty secret feature. It's wildly helpful to many. #Accessibility should not be a secret. It's not ugly.

@mothdust On Mastodon, and other fediverse-compatible microblogging applications, alt text is also often used for adding additional info about attachements, like image description can contain some context, names of depicted people or characters etc.Alt text is a very important part of fediverse, it's wide adoption both in software and in communities is what sets it apart from other social networks, and I think that having able to see a manually added attachment description should be not only expected, but required in this context

@untsuki in the case of actionable images, this is great practice but be careful about using alt text for things other than a description or description of the image purpose (if it has one) things not pertaining to the co text of the description or action of the image will be confusing to those who expect alt text to work in its intended way.

@untsuki which is why it's so important for this and many other sites, apps, services to highlight their accessibility features and outline why they're there. More education and knowledge is required for those who haven't had the exposure.
