@textfiles Love the under-bite which that VeriTyper's "face" appears to have!

How is it that I've only _just_ noticed that #OpenBSD's #ksh (and probably other shells) tab completion supports brace expansions?!For example:```$ .c{ache,onfig}/chr<tab>.cache/chromium/ .config/chromium/```

@jbowen Same! It was entirely an unintentional, muscle memory, press of the tab key. Not until looking at prior output after the fact did I notice it had done the right thing.

Now that #OpenBSD 7.4 is in the short-lived post-beta/pre-release period, I'm `sysupgrade`-ing my dev environment to the latest snapshot and will be confirming that my #swupdate utility still correctly adds the `-Dsnap` option when executing `pkg_add -u`:https://github.com/morgant/swupdate-openbsd/

Another two hours spent analyzing #serial connection issues between my #Apple #Newton #eMate running #PT100 and my #OpenBSD workstation via a #Keyspan USA-19HS #USB adapter:https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=169845381728847&w=2I always forget to check things with ktrace(1), but it's absolutely invaluable! I'll be starting working on adding flow control support to the ukspan(4) driver this weekend.

@mms I picked up fanless Qotom hardware w/an Intel i5 and a handful of 1Gb/s ethernet ports a year or so ago to use as my router, running bare #OpenBSD. I don't personally need more than 1Gb/s, but I think there are similar options out there now with 2.5+Gb/s ports.

@jhx Let's see...Currently: routing & packet filtering, DHCP, local caching DNS (nsd & unbound), reverse HTTP(S) proxy (relayd & httpd), HTTP (httpd & apache2), database (MariaDB), VPN (WireGuard), lots of SSH, version control systems (Subversion & Git), screen sharing (VNC via x11vnc) for workstations. On some machines, VMs (vmm/vmd).Previously and likely again: Twitch stream (RTMP via ffmpeg).

@mms @jhx Oh, no, definitely not! An edge router doing nothing more that routing & packet filtering, A couple other servers running VMs segregated by service (not for security, but to mitigate upgrades breaking multiple services at once) and sites (e.g. most websites have their own VM; for finer grained access control and -- again -- to mitigate an upgrade breaking dependencies for another site). Plus a primary workstation running -stable hosting a -current VM for ports development.

@howley This is probably more than you want, but I currently have an OpenBSD host running as a reverse proxy for multiple domains, a couple back-end hosts, plus LetsEncrypt SSL certs using `acme-client`. The latter parts were not really documented elsewhere, so I keep the following gist around to share with folks trying to do something similar:https://gist.github.com/morgant/f29bef43e6729e29612754a027744fb1Let me know if it helps or not or if you have any questions.

@ajroach42 I'm wondering the same, so bookmarked to keep track of replies.I haven't picked up a CNC machine yet, but it's _much_ higher on my list than a 3D printer. I primarily want to work with wood or soft metals, which seem far more sustainable/recyclable than contributing to the microplastics problem we've created.

@foone The house I grew up in had knob-and-tube wiring and those wires were fiber-wrapped and "nothing bad happened". That said, that house also had a two-story outhouse (fortunately offset slightly.)Vehicles moved from fiber-wrapped wiring to newer plastic-coated wiring is actually _much tastier_ to rodents. Plus, my old #SeriesLandRover with all that fiber-wrapped wiring only had one fuse, so super easy to work on.I digress. Yes, hemp cat6 with rope oil and porcelain connectors.

@foone Ours house was a New England mill-worker's home from the 1890s, so also had horse-hair and wood-lattice insulation behind all the plaster walls -- Surprise, I'm highly allergic to horses! -- and when my parents sold the house they were required to have the wiring modernized. Very understandable, but difficult with the wood lattice!

@urlyman @pluralistic Every time I go to the bank to do a deposit:Teller: Do you have your debit card?Me: I don't have one.T: Okay, I'll just text you a code.M: I don't have a cell phone.T: ...M: Here's my ID. Can I just have the deposit slip to fill out and sign? I've had the account number memorized for _thirty years._

@urlyman @pluralistic While the city I live in has reliable cell service for most providers, I live in a rural state. Most of the state does _not_ have reliable cell service or — where it does — it may only be a single carrier. Is that part of the reason this particular bank company has closed a lot of the more rural branches? Doubtful, but it probably doesn't help the organization's understanding of the technological problems of a rural state, with an aging and increasingly-poorer population.

@khm In my opinion, she makes a very good point about trying to host a massive, performant, product these days.My read of her thread was more, "What problem are we trying to solve?" Are they trying to provide very private messaging with E2EE which non-technical people can and will use? Or, do you want them to never let a single penny or amount of control pass to "big tech"?Which is the greater good for those who need privacy?

Big new v0.3 release of my #OpenBSD audio/video recording #CLI convenience utility, #recordctl, is now out:https://github.com/morgant/recordctl/releases/tag/0.3Building on v0.2, which switched to a clearer, more scriptable, MIB-like control syntax like sysctl(8), mixerctl(8), and sndioctl(1), it now features:1) A monitor (`-m`) mode showing changes to control values over time, like sndioctl(1) `-m`2) A `mix.monitor` control which exposes/manipulates whether sndiod(8) is configured for a "monitor mix"
