Hi fediverse!I'm teaching a class on technology ethics from a future perspective next week and want students to discuss real-life cases of tech and ethical questions in small groups. Does anyone have good suggestions for cases, especially beyond obvious ones like Cambridge Analytica?#technology #ethics #future

"While all of the respondents were people who understood the empowering potential of the technology, the overwhelming impression one gets from them was one of concern. They see widespread use of AI as leading to a loss of human agency, as decision-making on key aspects of life is ceded to code-driven “black box” systems."https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/dec/16/tech-experts-worried-about-artificial-intelligence-pew-research-center

This essay got me really interested in David Hume: https://aeon.co/essays/hume-is-the-amiable-modest-generous-philosopher-we-need-todayHow should I explore his philosophy further, especially his moral philosophy? Should I read the man himself or secondary sources? I guess Stanford Encyclopedia is one obvious first source. I have some background in philosophy of science but haven't formally studied philosophy.

How do fediverse people feel about negative identity, that is, defining yourself through things you don't approve, use etc.? It's good to be aware of issues and unjust things, but to be honest sometimes it is quite tiring. Its like: Let's listen to music, hmm, not sure I want to use Spotify. Let's watch a series, hmm, not sure I want to use Netflix etc.Researching privacy probably makes me think about this because it's generally such a negatively defined thing.

By coincidence I ended up reading an essay on potentiality by Agamben the other day (in "Potentialities"). I've been thinking a bit about potentiality, latent possibilities and so on, but haven't looked too deeply into the philosophy. Really interesting topic when we think about what could be possible in the future, by whom and with what effort.Have people here come across anything interesting on potentiality or similar topics?#philosophy

Reading up on Niklas Luhmann's Zettelkasten notetaking method (again). Looks fascinating and potentially very useful but also like a potential rabbit hole.I'm also always unsure how much to squeeze into any particular note system. Should I put todos in there? Project-related things? Meeting notes (with potentially important ideas)? Etc. etc.Feels like autumn creeping up and trying to keep on top of everything...

@liw Yeah, that distinction definitely makes sense, since (at least for me) projects and todos are transitory but interlinked notes are potentially relevant across projects. Having said that, notes are often also heavily context-dependent.One thing I've enjoyed is rapid bullet journalling to get things off my mind. Tbh I'm not entirely sure about the need for a 'permanent' accumulating note system.

Do people on the #fediverse have any recommendations of decent quality affordable MP3 players with large-ish storage and preferably bluetooth support? I've looked into the local web store for tech, and they only stock expensive models (from 200 euros or so). Background: I'm considering whether I actually need an Airsonic server or if I could just carry my music with me. Also MP3 players provide less distractions than phones, so better for actual focused listening.

@strypey I’ve had semi-good experiences with Riot a few years ago. Back then it was a little unreliable at least using the android emulation on my Sailfish phone, so ended up giving it up. I think it could be time to give it another go.

@strypey Yep. I think we already lost some of our family chats when we were using it for a while because I couldn’t quite figure out the management of encryption keys.

@strypey @lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net That’s a good way of looking at it. Even without being a technical expert it’s easy to see why having a decentralised encrypted chat system is not simple.

Over the past weeks I’ve been reading up on #zettelkasten note taking. I really like the idea that I don’t have to worry about hierarchy or “what goes where” when taking notes. Just dump everything in the same folder and tag stuff if necessary but even tags are not compulsory. Then finding stuff works by searching, not navigating some hierarchy. This last point is a big change for me, having previously used #emacs #orgmode
