@Romaq @freemo thanks! It seems as if I followed you from a while back, but I added freemo!Issues I’m having are with the “rate limit” for loading tweets. 600 is surprisingly restrictive because every tweet that you might read that gets loaded on your phone counts towards that. So imagine scrolling past a bunch, every one adds to it.

@Romaq @freemo (Cont.)When I hit the limit yesterday, suddenly I couldn’t see what the context was of any reply I got. And to respond without context is a bit like flying blind. It just shut down any intellectual conversation. For today, so far, I haven’t hit the limit so it’s behaving normally. But I expect later it’ll happen again.

Is there a fundamental mathematical explanation for why strings tend to get tangled?(Think headphones, power extension cords, Christmas lights, the garden hose, etc.)

@john1954moi My doggo does this half leg raise thing. Like he’s shy to be raising his leg at all so he does it as minimally as possible.Don’t have a photo of him peeing, but here’s him sleeping.

Invention idea:Probiotic gum to improve oral flora balance. Is this a solution looking for a problem? Or would this make a positive difference for incidence of mouth ulcers, or other issues perhaps?#science #oralhealth #biology #microbiome

@sixtra this was really, really good. Most points are things I’ve tried to correct in other people at one point or another. It’s nice to hear support for my own logical intuitions on these matters. The mistakes I’ve made are in regards to the nuance with respect to trusting our intuition (I had the opinion that intuition should never be trusted) and the limits of charitability when steelmanning another’s argument.

@sixtra I think you’re spot on.A lot of this comes down to a person’s definition of a word being loaded with meaning that another’s doesn’t come with.Like “belief”, which, as you know, is touched on in the video. But no one wants to hear that their definition needs adjustment.

Learned recently that “evidence” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. For some it’s anything that increases confidence in a belief. For others there’s a notion of repeatability or even whether it supports the leading theory at the time.Which is it? Or is it something else?

@dmitryro what would you call the kinds of evidence that doesn’t meet that standard? (For ex testimonials)

@dmitryro hard not to get by, even in science, without trusting the testimony of scientists who have proven this or that fact. While these testimonies could, in principle, be supported with a repetition of their methodology, the reality is we don’t have the time/ability so we trust the testimony. Not saying it’s as high quality as the other evidence, but surely there is *some* measure of validity to it.

@dmitryro still, I’m left wanting for a word that describes this kind of poor evidence.Evithin? (Less dense evidence 🤣😂)

Is one explanation that predicts two data points inherently more valuable than two independent explanations that predict the data?(So explanation A predicts ‘a’ data, and B predicts ‘b’ data vs explanation C that predicts both ‘a’ and ‘b’.)

@freemo @Romaq honestly, for me, I was not convinced I’d enjoy being a dad until I realized there was the dad joke angle. Then, of course, I realized that I love teaching, and I have these two little guys to teach all about everything.I actually love being a dad.But it’s not for everyone. My experience is not everyone’s.

Writers are getting upset that AI like ChatGPT can mimic their style very accurately after consuming their content and learning from it.How is this different than, say, an impersonator?Should we see AI the same as impersonation and give it the same legal status?#AI #ML #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #ChatGPT #legaltheory #art #prose
