       Is there a fundamental mathematical explanation for why strings tend to get tangled?(Think headphones, power extension cords, Christmas lights, the garden hose, etc.)

       @minogully There sure is, its called knot theory. It is a function of the length of the string, the longer it is the higher the probability it will tangle randomly.
