"Disagreement is necessary in deliberations among mortals. As the saying goes, the more we disagree, the more chance there is that at least one of us is right." - Steven PinkerI was just given an excellent recommendation for a book that I wanted to share with you, Mastodon.I'll link the GoodReads as I'm unaware of a fedi version yet.https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/87575630-rationality-what-it-is-why-it-seems-scarce-why-it-mattersFrom the recommendation - he discusses the topics of irrationality and rationality and how we as people scope the concept. I haven't read it yet, but the individual who brought it to me is very reliable.

Earlier this morning, someone told me that language is understood inherently. They didn't mean to say it, they just spoke from a situation in which the concept of talking and being heard was never up to question. Very American, very English as a first language, very able bodied of him.I asked him why he felt that it wasn't useful to communicate properly, but he never responded.I again asked him why he felt that we shouldn't focus on making sure the message was heard. He stopped and looked very confused at me.I was asking in #ASL. I'm not fluent, but I grew up with several deaf relatives (bad medicine made a lot of deaf kids) and was diagnosed with hearing issues young - so it's always been an area I was around. The realization on his face was absolutely worth the struggle we went through to get there. It was a total blindness from him. He just never considered he would say something to others that they just wouldn't be ABLE to understand. Our conversation was about messaging in general, so he was ready for the topic. But its a harsh reminder to everyone that everyone is different. I have hearing issues, you might have color blindess or maybe your back doesn't allow you to stand for long periods.Being aware of these differences makes us more human - not less. Being aware of the concept of 'other' costs so little and can mean so much.

@TonyStark Which makes absolute sense. Their whole mission is to create some illusionary fantasy land where people who aren't themselves just simply want to be removed and destroyed. You can't do that and survive in a society. They have spent the better part of 40 years trying to convince us that they are the way and the light and finally have enough people to carry their message that they think they can compel action. It won't work. It never works. It's one of the key reasons therapy has to be collaborative. I can make you listen, I can make you sit, I can't make you hear. I can't make you internalize. That's entirely on you.Its the internalization that hurts so bad. They have to see and own that they are wrong.

Do you know why people ask for #AltText to be added into photography? You might be unaware, but there are those of us on Mastodon who would love to see and experience the same jokes and information that others share. Unfortunately, we have gaps in our ability to fully immerse ourselves. For some, that manifests with lurking or following a lot of accounts but not really engaging. Perhaps they are anxious or have social struggles. They want to be included in a way that makes them feel safe. It's wonderful that tools like Mastodon allow for that. For some of us, it's a lot harder. We have restrictions into how we can take in the world around us physically. You see it manifest in the physical in small ways (door handles that are levers not twists) or in larger ways (enforcement of ramp access, hearing interpreters, etc.)For those of us who require additional support like guided sight to help us navigate complex and dangerous systems the world can seem very threatening when people don't seem to notice or care about your limitations.AltText allows those of us who aren't able to fully engage visually. Sometimes we're blind, or have sight challenges, sometimes we're not able to focus on the screen and use auditory assistance.Whatever the reason - help your fellow Mastodonians will you? Simply remark on the infographic, meme, or photo with a description of what we should be seeing. It doesn't have to be super complex. Its a small and easy way to better improve the ecosystem around us.

Mastodon has such a wide and diverse culture. I'm routinely in political discussions, humanities topics and various computery things. I am sometimes in photography topics, or maybe philosophy and arts. On occasion I'll see an amazing think piece or a new piece of learning that I can explore and dive into. The ocean of Mastodon is filled with every changing and swirling currents of every topic imaginable. With a click of a userid you can explore the insights of Data Science, see an article on Global Warming, enjoy a reference to Cocaine Bear, and then find yourself suddenly weighing in on an opinion on a subject, with the literal PhD who wrote the book you're referencing.Gargron, you founded something truly amazing.

@SideWalkAstronomyNetherlands That's popular when it's possible. Your population is: ~17,802,700The United Stats has ~333,287,557.Assuming that the population that would need to relocate was only our marginalized -- so to be clear we're talking:* Non-white* Non-straight* Non-republican* Non-specifically-Fascits-RepublicansSo let's assume that is less than the majority and call it 70%. That roughly translates to 233,301,289 people.Might I bring them to your country please? Can you alert your government that something around 18 times your entire countries population need food, clothing, lodging, support services (medical & religious mind you), we're also going to need to work on the language. Our population is primarily English, Hispanic, Italian, French - and I see you only cover French and English. We will bring enough translators from those four primary to our edge cases.I'm not trying to be rude - but I want you to fully understand what you're asking us to do when you say, "Just move" and how dismissive it is for a population that COULD just move. We could solve that exact problem. I don't think your country would appreciate that. I don't think anyone would. It's not a real solution.@MJ @TonyStark @NoctisEqui

Are you 'professionally curious' or even just absolutely curious how influential #JohnMastodon has been to the earth in the last few months?@tchambers and his team have put together an excellent summary of the great #Twitter exodus. Very worth your time, even if you are just curious where everyone went.https://www.deweysquare.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/DSG-Snapshot-of-the-Twitter-Migration-March-2023.pdf#TwitterMigration #analytics #business

I literally just learned you can add notes to people! Similar to how you can label other contacts and pieces of information this is super useful if you're forgetful like me.Literally, when you click someone's profile you can just `Click to add note` and it saves it. Seems simple, but I literally never even considered it until someone mentioned how useful it was.If you already knew it? Awesome! If you didn't? Well, now you can pretend you did. I promise I won't tell.

@KimPerales This should absolutely be terrifying and we should absolutely be rejecting and pushing this away from us.This would basically make it 'ok' to search all mail for potential whatever. That is way to close to "We don't like you talking about this - so we've redacted it" levels of thought censorship. This is dangerous.

@TonyStark Maybe I'm just broken or something, because I was under the impression that since I was only useful for the fertilization of the egg -- I was already under "limited rights".Why is this very male dominated panel (6 guys, 3 girls) extending their limited rights? They aren't discussing inseminating these people - they aren't doctors, they should not have authority in this realm.Perhaps we should pivot one thing and see if they like it. I believe that all male judges should be castrated non-chemically in order to prevent bias based on my medical expertise. I read a book once that discussed men being castrated in order to prevent chemicals from messing with their heads. It was a Romance novel, but for all I know the author was a Doctor. I have as much confidence in that authors medical knowledge as I do random elected judges. It's so frustrating that the "rules for thee, and not for me" have become just everywhere now.
