Back on the #NYCsubway after a week riding the Paris metro and I want every last person with decision-making power at the MTA to have the words THREE MINUTE HEADWAYS tattooed on the inside of their eyelids. Every decision should be made on the grounds of whether it gets us closer to that goal.Anyone who utters the phrase “one seat ride” should be summarily fired. I cannot emphasize how much that does not matter if you can rely on the next train getting there quickly.

So now having had one or two things I’ve posted go moderately viral (well, by fediverse standards) it seems like the ratio of reposts to people I need to block for being ridiculous neurotic pedants is about 200:1. It’s not a bad number in absolute terms but my god does it augur poorly for the experience here if masto actually grows much more.

@futurebird @tob @Naich strong concurrence. I think mastodon has mistakenly attributed a relative lack of antisocial behavior compared to Twitter to the fact that it lacks some basic UX affordances, rather than to the relatively small size of the network and judicious moderation policies.

@futurebird we’re not even, IMO, doing a particularly good job of exploring the UI possibilities of the glass rectangle!I realize that this makes me a dinosaur, but I think the UI language of iOS 7 and onwards was a horrific mistake. Skeuomorphism isn’t something to be avoided, quite the opposite! If the UI doesn’t suggest its own use, what are you even doing?

@futurebird I've gotten into multiple arguments with my neighbors who were upset that a new all-subsidized-affordable-housing development in our neighborhood was “too tall.”I live in Manhattan.The new building is on Broadway.

@futurebird @cykonot it’s definitely Linux under the hood, but Google intentionally refers to the whole kit and kaboodle as “ChromeOS” so the confusion is not unreasonable!

@futurebird it’s honestly a frankly crappy landscape right now. Everything you have noted about Chromebooks is correct. MacBooks are great but you pay $$$$$ for that hardware quality. I miss Apple’s old plastic iBook models: they really were designed with students in mind.I eventually got my middle schooler an iPad Air and a folio keyboard but there are trade offs: nobody tests school apps on iPads, so we kept running into issues with DeltaMath.

@futurebird there’s an early TNG episode where Wesley accidentally creates a swarm of intelligent nanites and after the crew finally figure out how to communicate with the swarm they agree to just let the swarm have an uninhabited planet. It’s… not a great episode (I did say “Wesley” after all) but it’s the only example I can think of!
